Engineering Hardware

the story of Kontakt.io’s Gateway and

Samsung ARTIK™

Kontakt.io Gateway

The Kontakt.io Gateway is a device that scans for

beacons that are in range and sends data about

beacon location, movement, and health to the cloud

over WiFi.

Anyone can access these features using Location Engine either through Kontakt.io’s web-based Panel or

through Kontakt.io’s API, which can be integrated with any asset tracking or beacon management platform.

Samsung™ ARTIK

Samsung ARTIK™ is a smart, integrated IoT

platform that provides the fastest path to secure,

interoperable, and intelligent IoT products and

services.

Integrating everything into a single module, including processor, memory, connectivity and embedded

software, allows developers to focus on the real value of their solutions instead of worrying about low

level nuts and bolts.

Creating cutting edge hardware for the IoT was not easy

“Creating a piece of hardware is a very complicated task. You

need to choose right components, evaluate them, integrate

them on a board. Then, you have to create software to run on

this device, keeping security and functionality in mind. Finally,

at this stage, you only have a working piece of electronics, just

a device; what about the backend, casings, certifications?”

— Łukasz Szelejewski, Head of Hardware, Kontakt.io

Key Gateway construction requirements

Gateway has been 10x more complex than other pieces

of hardware we’ve worked on.

Łukasz Szelejewski, Head of Hardware, Kontakt.io

- Small SoM

- WiFi

- BLE

- Processing power

- Strong security support

Why we chose ARTIK

Integrity

Every single piece of hardware was already there so we didn’t have to think about adding additional components to the board.

It gave us time to market, which is crucial when the market is evolving so fast. (Łukasz)

Security

We know that the data that is stored on the device is completely secure. The data encryption over Internet is also secure and

encrypted on the fly. (Łukasz)

Processing power

We can do a lot of computing on a device itself. This helps us process complex data on the device, reduce the amount of data

being sent over the internet and reduce network traffic. (Łukasz)

“When Kontakt.io came about with an idea for the Gateway, it

was quite an exciting prospect, so we thought ‘we need to get

behind this.’ ”

Samsung

The role of Gateway in IoT

Foundation for data

“Making everything smart means making sure that everything can talk to

everything, and you can get the data that you need and create value from that data.

The beacon market is interesting because the real value of IoT is in data, how you

deal with the data and how you analyze it. Behind this end-to-end solution that

Kontakt.io have created is a very exciting value proposition.”

—Ashish Sethi, Strategic Business Development Manager, Samsung

Data security and integrity

“It is crucial to make sure that data is kept confidential, no

matter if it’s stored on the device, being sent over internet or

over local servers.”—Łukasz Szelejewski, Head of Hardware,

Kontakt.io

Bluetooth as foundation for the connected world

“There are so many different standards out there that are vying for popularity, to be

the protocol of choice for IoT. The reality is, there probably won’t be one winner of

everything... They all have to mix and mesh together. That’s why interoperability is a

key issue for everyone.

Bluetooth is always going to be there. It is ubiquitous. It’s in every phone. It’s in

every laptop, tablet. “

— Ashish Sethi, Strategic Business Development Manager, Samsung

Gateway technology will redefine:

- People and asset tracking

- Workspace management

- Manufacturing

- Warehousing

- Retail

- Smart cities

- Transportation

Advice for business leaders in IoT

Focus on value

“Delivering just a connected thing isn’t enough anymore. It

needs to be interoperable, it needs to be talking to other

things, data needs to be coming from it and needs to be

analyzed.” — Ashish Sethi, Strategic Business Development

Manager, Samsung

Don’t neglect security

“People don’t know how important it is to have their connected

things secure. Right now, it isn’t a big issue, but we know that in

the near future we’ll hear about big leaks and security issues.

Keeping privacy between devices and servers should be key for

developers and hardware manufacturers”—Łukasz Szelejewski,

Head of Hardware, Kontakt.io

Questions to ask

- Where are your revenue streams generated?

- Where can you add the most value?

- How can you differentiate yourself from the competition?

Essential topics to consider

- Features

- User experience

- Data and analytics

- Interoperability

“Don’t spend too much time

on nuts and bolts on the

bottom end.”
