Engineering Concepts Chapter 1 Terms

CENTER LINE A line consisting of a

long dash followed by a short dash, that is used to show and locate centers of arcs and circles, and to describe the center axis of cylindrical forms.

CUT Inventor software

command that removes material from a solid model.

DIMENSION Numerical value used

on a drawing to describe location, size, shape, or geometric characteristic.

EXTRUDE Inventor software

command that adds material to a sketch or existing solid model.

EXTENSION LINE Thin lines used to

establish the extent of a dimension.

HIDDEN LINE Lines used to show

details not visible from a particular view.

INDUSTRIAL AGE Age characterized by

the advent of manufacturing machinery and the movement of populations to cities from farms.

INFORMATION AGE Age characterized by

the rise of Internet communications.

INNOVATION The introduction of

something new; a new idea, method, or device.

ISOMETRIC A drawing projected so

that the plane of projection of a three-dimensional drawing forms equal angles (120 degrees) to each of the three axes of the object.

OBJECT LINE Slightly lighter than a

profile line, used to add all details to a sketch.

ORTHOGRAPHIC Right angle projection.

The views of an object are drawn in perpendicular planes to one another.

PROPORTIONAL Comparative

relationship between things with respect to size.

SCALE The ability to change

the proportions or size of one part of the image in relationship to the other.

SECTION LINE A line or pattern used

to represent the presence of a particular material in an engineering drawing.

SKETCH A freehand drawing of

an idea, or solution to a problem without concern for detail.

SPACE AGE Relating to, or befitting

the age of space exploration.

STONE AGE The first known period

of prehistoric human culture characterized by the use of stone tools.

SURFACE A two-dimensional

area on a plane.

VIEWS The different viewing

perspectives found in mechanical drawing.
