YOUR RESPONSE – ABILITY
Session One: Overview
The greatest battles have not been fought around the world but
in the human mind. In the domain of the will, the battle is
waged. Jesus made it clear that the center of man’s relationship
with God is in the inner self (heart, soul and mind) and neither
in devotional acts nor ministry service.
Mark 12:30-31, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart,
all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength…and love
your neighbor as yourself.”
Your mind is not only the greatest battlefield of your life but
also one of the greatest, most powerful weapons you hold in
finding peace of mind. We begin this workshop by laying a
foundation of three principles. These principles will be
expanded and built upon throughout the entire workshop. It is
crucial that these become second nature as we walk in God’s
provision of healing, life, peace and hope.
1. The Journey Principle: Choose-IT:
Choose to be present, authentic with a community of
believers, pursuing truth and persevering till the end.
2. The Onion Principle: Accept-IT:
Accept His ways that involve process, stages and
time.
3. The Tree Principle: Own – IT:
Own all the fruit that flows from your life.
Let’s begin by defining the concept of responsibility in a new
way.
Defining Response – Ability: as the ability to choose how to
respond to stimulation and circumstances coming at any
moment in time. No one has the power to make you feel
anything except for you. Nothing external has the power to take
away your peace, joy or sense of belonging. That is completely
in your power to surrender. You may not be in total control of
what happens to you in life, but you are certainly in total control
of how you choose to respond to your experiences. This puts
the power, the choice, the responsibility of actions taken and
responses given squarely upon ones’ self.
I. The Journey Principle
Matthew 4:19, “Jesus called out to them, come follow me…”

Luke 14:27, “Whoever does not bear his cross and come after
me cannot be my disciple…” (NKJ)
I want you to notice two callings with different commitment
levels. The first call is to gather willing followers. The second
call is to bring followers into discipleship with Christ. To
journey in greater depths of discipleship and fellowship, which
leads to peace of mind, we must make a few foundational
choices on this journey. Let’s take a look at the New Testament
believers’ choices.
Acts 2:42 & 44, “…the believers devoted themselves to the
apostle’s teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals
(including the Lord’s Supper) and to prayer. And all believers
met together…and shared everything they had.”
Acts 4:29, 31 & 32, “O, Lord, hear their threats, and give us,
your servants, great boldness in preaching your word. After the
prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the
Holy Spirit…with boldness...all the believers were united in
heart and mind…”
A. You must choose to be present in the midst of a
community of believers and journey together.
o Notice the description of believers: devotion,
sharing and together.
o We must be connected to believers to journey
effectively.
B. You must choose to be authentic in the midst of
relationships of journeying with believers.
o To be authentic is to be willing to
acknowledge how things really are.
o The fruit of authenticity has the capacity to
produce unity and oneness.
C. You must choose to pursue truth on this journey.
o Pursuing truth takes God’s intervention.
o You can have as much of God as you desire,
you set the gauge.
D. You must choose to persevere on the journey
regardless of what confronts you.
o It takes determination to allow trials and
situations to produce good.
o When you persevere through – God brings
break through (James 1:2-4).
ACTION STEP: So in order to Deal With-IT, you must use
your response – ability to choose to be present, authentic,
pursue truth and persevere on this journey.

II. The Onion Principle
Psalm 103:7, “He revealed His ways to Moses and His acts to
Israel.” (RSV)
God will reveal Himself to you both in acts and ways. The key
is, what do you seek and expect? His acts or His ways? We
easily accept His acts, but how readily do we accept His way?
Ephesians 4:13, “until we become mature, attaining the whole
measure of fullness in Christ.” (NIV)
A. We must accept that His ways of maturing us
involves process.
o There are no quick fixes or shortcuts to God’s
ways.
B. We must accept that His ways of maturing us
involves layers and stages of growth.
o We all grow in stages and learn in stages.
C. Within each layer of the onion of my life, familiar
themes will emerge.
o These themes are the ungodly beliefs we have
embraced based upon our experiences.
o They begin very young in our lives.
o Familiar themes will be seen in different
layers again and again.
D. We must accept that His ways of maturing us
involves time, actually a lifetime.
o Time is needed to understand His ways and
what He is doing in us.
ACTION STEP: So in order to Deal With-IT, you must use
your response – ability to accept His ways that involve
process, layers, stages, themes and a lifetime. The onion
principle sets the precedent that enables us to keep walking
the journey with God, one layer at a time.
III. The Tree Principle
Genesis 3:7-9, “Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and
they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together
and made coverings for themselves. Then the man and his wife
heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the
garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God

among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the
man, “Where are you?” (NIV)
There is a pattern in these verses that we can follow in our own
lives. We fall into temptation and attempt our cover-ups with
God, others and ourselves. However, the love of our Lord and
Savior is never silent and He calls to us where we are. We are
then given an opportunity through grace to use our Response –
Ability to be known and stand up in our place of shame and sin.
This is where the Lord deals with us through kindness and love.
Our cover-up attempts
The Lord’s call to us where we are
Our opportunity to Own-IT
The Lord’s dealings of grace with us
Matthew 7:16, “By their fruit you will recognize them. Do
people pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles?”
(NIV)
Matthew 12:34b-35, “For the mouth speaks what the heart is
full of. A good man brings good things out of the good stored up
in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored
up in him.” (NIV)
A. We must own what flows from our behaviors, thoughts
and words.
o Fruit can be described as the product of a seed,
hidden deep beneath the surface.
o How honest am I willing to be with myself?
B. We must own what kind of fruit is born in our life.
o The outward fruit of my life is related to the
health of my inner life.
o I can’t pray for crop failure and keep on doing
wrong.
C. We must recognize the need for both the community of
believers and God to assist in identifying and owning
the fruit that one can’t see.
o I need others and God to see myself.
o I must develop intimacy (in-to-me-see) with God
and others.
ACTION STEP: So in order to Deal With-IT, you must use
your response – ability to own all the fruit that flows from
your life.

Review of Session One Response – Ability: the ability to choose how to respond to stimulation

To Deal With-IT you must use your response – ability to

GOING DEEPER
Going Deeper is the place to evaluate each session, record new revelations and insights and to plan
what takeaways you want to incorporate into your walk with God. Take your time and prayerfully
consider the following, asking the Father to reveal to you what He desires to heal and restore in your
heart and life.
Everyone processes information differently and learns differently. The questions and evaluations are
to assist you in discovering what God is bringing to your attention in this workshop. How you track
this is your choice. Some prefer to journal, others prefer to make lists and still others choose to
make mental notes as they listen. You are free to assimilate this information in the way that best
serves you and gives you the space to walk out the Holy Spirit’s leading in your life.
A clear and concise path will be navigated to direct you toward what will be covered in the final
prayer session. What you bring to that session is between you and God.
