Embedded Librarianship
in the LMS
ALA Webinar Notes
Rationale for Embedding in the LMS
LMS is a community space It’s where they are already Being embedded in the LMS is proactive
2/3 of face-to-face classes also use the LMS (so what about embedded librarianship…?)
Top 3 student-used resources that grew in the last year
E-portfolio Web-based citation tools E-books So we need to be there to help them use these!
Comments Having never actually done an online
course or successfully gotten a professor to invite me to be an active participant in their module, I was hoping for more practical “how to sell the embedded” approach.
After going through lengthy rationale and research about embedded librarianship itself, they did give some interesting tips. What I think will work best are highlighted…
(marketing tips provided by presenters)
Also how about…? “Won’t take your class time” “Easier to assess and gauge
participation” “Much of what they will access is
already online”What do you think? How can we get our faculty to invite us to participate in their on-the-map courses?
(assessment…obviously)
Thoughts on assessmentWe need to be bold with our assessment and not shy away from taking a hard, critical look at our approaches. We shouldn’t be afraid of redesigning instructional materials for an embedded environment.
So, was it useful? The webinar was useful in elaborating
on the reasons why librarians should take an embedded approach but did not adequately address what to do once you’re there.
Our approach (embedded in mapped courses) seems to be unique and so we will likely have to forge our own path…
Final questions…Can we create targeted, unique content
for all of our classes that we can easily embed? Can we utilize Web 2.0 technologies and social media to get students to do more creative work?
Will students retain skills more with this approach? Will they recognize the library as a valuable spot in their academic careers/lives as learners?
Final questions… Can/should we think bigger? Embed in
all courses? Is LMS-embedded librarianship the future?
