Robert Van de Graaff (1901-1967) Age 65

In 1929 and with help from Nicholas Burke, Van de Graaff developed his first generator which producing 80,000 volts.

By 1931, he constructed a much larger generator that generated 7 million volts.

Van de Graaff was the designer of the Van de Graaff generator; A device which produces high voltages by moving electrical charges from a high voltage source to a metal sphere, by the means of moving insulating belts.

First born of 11 siblings, four of whom died at a young age due to poor living conditions.

At 5 years old he worked in the family glass workshop where he learned the fine skills of glassblowing.

In 1864 Geissler demonstrated his tubes and vacuum pump for public.

In 1857 Geissler made sealed tubes of various shapes at low pressure and then fitted two platinum electrode connections on each end, (the Geissler Tube) thus playing a very important role in the discovery of cathode rays, canal rays and X-rays in the years that followed. But just before William Crookes’ great breakthrough of vacuum tube technology, Geissler died.
