Impact of TBI on Vocational,
Educational, and Social
Participation in Adults
Steven Wheeler, PhD, OTR/L, CBIS
University of Cincinnati
Provides an overview of executive
cognitive functions and assessment
and treatment approaches designed
to improve performance deficits as
they pertain to community reinte-
gration. Deficits in executive
functioning are common after
moderate and severe traumatic brain
injury and greatly hinder the ability
to resume adult social, vocational,
family and leisure roles. Through
understanding important elements
of cognitive performance, rehabili-
tation professionals can implement
services to enhance an individual’s
community reintegration following
TBI.
Spreading Depolarizations: A
Precision Medicine Approach
to TBI Treatment
Laura B. Ngwenya, MD, PhD
University of Cincinnati
Gardner Neuroscience Institute
Because clinical trials in traumatic
brain injury have not yielded definitive
treatments or interventions, a precision
medicine approach is needed to
advance the field of TBI. This includes
obtaining more information about brain
injured patients. Abnormal brain waves
known as spreading depolarizations
(SDs) occur in patients with severe
traumatic brain injury. The extent that
SDs in mild and moderate TBIs are
unknown. Clinical studies on SDs in
TBI will help identify a patient
population that can be targeted for
therapeutic intervention.
