The various types of playground equipment must be used in a
reasonable manner to ensure the safety of all children.
1. Swings - No more than one person on each swing at one time will be
allowed. There will be no twisting of the swings, no holding hands
and swinging sided to side, running under the swings, and no
standing or jumping out of the swings.
2. Metal Climbing Bars - No student will be allowed to stand on the
top or to engage in any other unsafe activity.
3. Slide - Only one person may come down the slide at a time, feet first
and may not come down until the previous child is completely clear
of the slide. Standing on the top of the slide is not allowed. Pupils
are not allowed to slide down on their feet and are not allowed to
throw rocks, gravel or snow up or down the slide.
4. Bars - These are to be used from one direction and on the underside
only. Students are not to attempt to crawl or walk on the top.
5. Football - Students will play flag football only.
The school provides the student with footballs, jump ropes and
other equipment for use during recess. Students are discouraged from
bringing their own balls, toys, computer games, etc. from home. The
school cannot be responsible for the loss of these items. Roller-blades,
baseball bats, hard balls and other unsafe items are not allowed on
school grounds.

The following rules cannot possibly cover all situations, but will help develop playground behavior. These rules have been established for the protection of the students.
There are certain types of behavior that will not be allowed. They are:
Fighting, wrestling, attempting to provoke fights, kicking, hitting or any other type of assault, provoked or unprovoked
Throwing snowballs or rocks
Defying the adult in charge
Leaving the playground without permission
Obscenity or profanity
Intimidation of other students
Verbal cruelty, name calling or ridiculing
Spitting
Lying
Theft
Eating candy, gum or drinking soda
Carrying or use of tobacco, alcohol or controlled substances
Willful destruction of school property
Weapons
Other rules will be enforced at the discretion of the playground supervisor, should the situation warrant, (i.e. sliding on the ice).

The mission of Platte Valley School District Re-3 is to prepare
lifelong learners to meet the challenges of our changing global
society as responsible citizens in a safe, diverse and academically
challenging environment.
Students will learn to think critically and creatively, and apply
problem-solving strategies in seeking information through a variety
of resources, with an emphasis on reading, communication, and
technology skills. Platte Valley Re-3 will model fairness, honor
quality, and expect achievement at each person’s highest level of
ability. In partnership with home and community, the Platte Valley
Schools will empower the next generation to think, question, invent,
anticipate, and dream.
Each classroom teacher will establish his or her own
classroom rules. The teacher will send their rules home in a
separate letter. Please review all rules with your child and sign the
appropriate slip stating that you and your child have read and
discussed them together. These rules will also be reviewed and
discussed in the classroom.
Student’s shirts, blouses, sweaters and tops will be worn in
good taste. They should be suitable for classroom wear and worn
appropriately. No article of clothing promoting drugs, tobacco,
alcohol, sex, vulgar language or any gang related ensigns/symbols or
any representation there of will be worn, either in a humorous or
stylish manner, on school grounds or at any away activity. No tank
tops, sun dresses, undershirts, halter-tops, or mid-drift exposure will
be allowed. All shorts and skirts must be at least fingertip length. All
shorts, pants, etc. must be worn at the student’s hips or above. No
ragged or badly torn clothes is acceptable. Shoes must be worn.
Flip flops and sandals are accepted. Hats (bandanas,
netware or any other type of head covering) and
sunglasses may NOT be worn in school. Students should
take pride in their appearance at school and school
activities.

WE BELIEVE respect for self, family, school personnel and
community are values of the school and the community, with
each individual accountable for their own actions.
WE BELIEVE teachers, parents and the community, along with
the student, share in the responsibility and support of the
student’s education.
WE BELIEVE critical thinking and higher order thinking skills,
together with effective communications are imperative for the
success of our students.
WE BELIEVE the meaningful use of technology must be
integrated across the curriculum in order for our students to
learn to compete in a global and diverse society.

1. Students will be prompt at the bus stops at school and their
place of residents. Drivers will wait no more than one minute.
2. Stay seated face-forward at all times.
3. Students shall not open windows without permission. Heads,
hands and all objects shall be kept inside the bus at all times.
4. Any behavior, which jeopardizes the safety of passengers or the
driver, is prohibited.
5. Students may talk quietly using appropriate language. Students
MUST be quiet at railroad crossings.
6. Items are not allowed in the aisle nor blocking any exits.
7. Food, liquid and gum ARE NOT ALLOWED on regular bus routes.
Exceptions will be made for activity trips where sponsors and
students are responsible for picking up trash and cleaning the
bus.
8. If seatbelts are provided, they MUST be worn.
9. Students waiting for the bus will stand behind the yellow line.

Special room parties are scheduled each year. These parties
are planned and supervised as a joint effort by the teacher and the
parent. Students may bring birthday treats to celebrate their special
day. The teacher should be notified ahead of time. Individual
birthday party invitations are NOT to be handed out at school unless
the entire class is invited.
Transportation to and from school will be provided. If it is
necessary for the student to ride a different bus they should have a
note from home allowing them to do so. In the event of inclement
weather and/or bad roads, plan on the bus being about 5 to 10
minutes early. Please ensure that Jessie or Shawn has your primary
contact numbers for auto-call notifications.
Elementary students will depart from the high school to
Sedgwick at 7:30 a.m.

A teacher may use field trips during the school year to
strengthen a student’s knowledge of a particular subject. Parents
will always be notified of an upcoming field trip unless the activity is
part of the regular school curriculum. Parents are asked to sign a
permission slip at the beginning of the school year, which gives their
child permission to attend school-sponsored field trips.

Students who are not bussed should not arrive at school earlier
than 7:30, unless eating breakfast. Students should leave the
school grounds as soon as school is dismissed at the end of the
day. Parents of bussed students are encouraged to take them
home with you at the end of the day when you are at school.
When a student has an early morning appointment or will be
tardy, PLEASE call the school at 463-5650. Students who arrive
after 7:50 will be counted tardy. Parents must excuse students
who are absent for any reason. PLEASE CALL THE OFFICE IF
YOUR CHILD WILL BE ABSENT. If a child has to be dismissed
early, please notify the office. It cannot be stressed enough that
attendance is necessary for your child’s school success. Much
learning occurs in group activity, which cannot be made up at
home. Please value school attendance as a priority and ensure
that your child regularly attends school. Students are
responsible for assignments that they miss due to absence.
Platte Valley Elementary believes that children need fresh air
and exercise every day, even during the cold months. Therefore,
children are expected to go outside for recess properly dressed.
When extreme temperature or weather conditions occur (based on
the judgment of the staff) all children are kept inside. If a child has
been ill, and upon returning to school is not fully recovered, parents
are asked to send a not advising us of the situation.
Individual pictures and classroom pictures are taken of the
students each year. Individual pictures will be taken on Wednesday,
August 21st. Parents will be notified when classroom pictures will be
taken. Students in Preschool-6th grade will have individual pictures
taken as well as a classroom picture.

Students taking medication during the school day are
required to have a completed medicine form, which includes doctor
and parent signatures. Medication must be in its proper container
and will be locked in the office and distributed by trained personnel.
This requirement pertains to ALL medication, prescription and
non-prescription.
Teachers will keep students and parents informed of
unsatisfactory work. Parents are encouraged to call the teacher with
any concerns about their child’s academic progress. Our school has
a grading system that allows parents to view your child’s grades
online. If you are interested contact the school for an application.
Progress reports will be sent home by the teacher on a regular basis.
Books will be issued to each student at the start of the school
year and the student will be responsible for each book issued. If a
textbook or library book is lost or damaged a reimbursement charge
will be issued.
Platte Valley Elementary uses the district standards for our
curriculum. These standards meet and/or exceed the state
standards. We follow the Colorado State Assessment Program
schedule for the assessing of these standards. The teacher assesses
those standards not being tested by the state in the classroom.
Title I is intended to serve students with educational needs
by providing services above and beyond those provided by the
regular school program. Title I provides individual help for students
having the greatest educational needs in reading and math classes.
Factors that determine if a child qualifies for Title I: Beginning and
mid-year testing, partially proficient or below on CSAP, and teacher
recommendation.
Platte Valley Elementary has the use of a school nurse
through the facilities of the Northeast Colorado Public Health
Department. If a student or parent desires to confer with the nurse
they should contact the office.

Report cards will be issued on the Friday following the end of
the 9 weeks. The following grade system is being used:
100%-98% = A+ 84%-82% = C+
97%-96% = A 81%-79% = C
95%-93% = A- 78%-76% = C-
92%-90% = B+ 75%-74% = D+
89%-88% = B 73%-72% = D
87%-85% = B- 71%-70% = D-
Below 70% = F
An “I” grade will be an “F” grade one week after being issued
if the student does not make arrangements to make up the work. If
a child is failing a class this will make him/her ineligible and may
keep them from participating in certain activities.
Kindergarten-2nd Grade, PE and Computer classes will use the
following grade system:
A - Advanced PP - Partially Proficient
P - Proficient U - Unsatisfactory
Special Education, otherwise known as Resource Room, is a
separate program for students who have been identified. Students
may be referred to the Resource teacher by classroom teachers,
parents or administration. They are then tested by the Resource
teacher, speech therapist and psychologist to see if they qualify for
the program. Each student’s learning program is tailored to meet
his/her individual needs through an Individualized Education Plan,
IEP, which is regularly updated by the classroom and Resource
teachers. Since it is the concern of the school, as well as the Special
Education Program, that the child be present in the classroom as
much as possible, the Resource teacher instructs the student in the
class whenever feasible. It is sometimes necessary for the student
to be taken out of the classroom to work on certain areas. Early
identification and remediation of these problem areas leads to a
more successful and enjoyable school career for these students.
Honor roll is given to students in the 5th and 6th grades.
Honor roll lists will be published in the newspaper and posted at
school. A student who receives all A’s and B’s will
be placed on the Principal’s Honor Roll. A stu-
dent that receives all A’s will be placed on the
Superintendent’s Honor Roll.

The counselor will make every effort to keep an open door
policy. The counselor is never too busy to talk to students, parents/
guardians, faculty and staff. The counselor’s endeavors are to assist
all students in achieving their potential, academic learning, personal
and interpersonal effectiveness and development in life skills.
Any parent/guardian who would like more information
concerning how you can help your student during their school years
and beyond is invited to call the elementary or high school, and the
counselor will be more than glad to discuss any issue with you.
It is important that parents promote a positive attitude
towards school. It is our desire that your children are successful in
school. Here are some reasons for your child doing homework:
1. To complete unfinished class assignments.
2. To provide additional drill in subject areas where skills
have not been mastered, especially in the basics of
reading, math, and spelling.
3. To provide additional help for the students who need
more time to complete assignments under the direction
and instruction of the teacher.
4. To do work missed because of illness or absenteeism.
While the student should assume the major responsibility for
completing the homework assignment, parents are encouraged to
take an active interest in their student’s homework by:
1. Promoting a positive attitude towards homework
2. Provide consistent time and an suitable place for study
3. Encouraging your child to complete all assignments
during school time.
4. Assisting with drill-math facts, spelling words, etc.
5. Taking time to read with your child
Students are given the opportunity to check out books from
the library.
All students will learn computer skills. A formal keyboarding
computer program is used with students in grades 1-6. All students
in Kindergarten-6th grades are introduced to basic computer skills.

A well balanced hot lunch and breakfast will be available to
students in grades K-6 daily.
Options for Students:
1. School hot lunch.
2. Bring a lunch from home. NO pop will be allowed.
Lunch/breakfast money may be paid on a daily, weekly or
monthly basis. When sending lunch/breakfast money with your
student, please have your student’s name on it. All lunch/breakfast
money will be handled in the office.
Student lunches are $1.85 and staff lunches are $2.85.
Reduced lunches are $0.40 for grades 3-5. Reduced lunches for
grades K-2 are free. Non-staff adult lunches are $3.25. Additional
milk is $0.30. Breakfast prices are $0.75 and reduced are free.
Please try and stay current with payments. Students are only
allowed 2 charges. Applications for free and reduced meals will be
sent home with each student the first day of school.
When food substitutions are needed for medical or dietary
reasons, the lunch program will make every reasonable effort to
accommodate the needs of the students.
Parents that desire to eat with their children are more than
welcome! However, we do ask that you notify the office no later
than 8:30 that day to insure the correct number of portions are
prepared.
Students will participate in Physical Education. If a student
needs to be excused from a P.E. activity, please send a note stating
the medical reason. Students not bringing a note will participate. If
a child has been ill or injured where a physician was consulted, a
medical release needs to be brought to school. All students are
asked to wear tennis shoes for P.E. These can be the tennis shoes
they normally wear. Students should bring tennis shoes in their
backpacks if they are wearing other types of shoes. If a student fails
to have tennis shoes they will receive an unsatisfactory for the day. Do not reproduce
