Your Experiences with Walkthroughs…

2

Please interrupt, ask questions, and share your insights as we talk today.

Materials• Copy of PowerPoint• Copy of Keokuk’s Template• Copy of Explanation of Keokuk’s

Template• eWalk Schedule• List of Resources on Walkthroughs

4

In this session we will…• Increase our knowledge and skills to

use data to improve learning environments

• Understand the various purposes walkthroughs

• Learn about using technology to collect and analyze walkthrough data

• Consider the place of walkthroughs with the new evaluation system

5

ISBE Teaching Standards…• Walkthroughs (and this session)

support…• Standard 5: Learning Environment• Standard 6: Instructional Delivery• Standard 7: Communication• Standard 8: Assessment• Standard 9: Reflection and Professional

Purpose of eWalks• For administrators to get a better understanding

of instruction throughout the district not just in his/her building

• To increase administrators’ knowledge of instructional practices at all grade levels

• To monitor implementation of professional development

• To determine professional development needs• To use handheld technology to collect, present,

analyze and store classroom instructional data• To use the collected and analyzed classroom data

to coach teachers and administrators in order to further improve instructional practice

• Bottom Line: To improve student achievement!

8

Why use walkthroughs?• Demonstrates instructional leadership• Generates the conversation about instruction

and curriculum• Provides a structure that collects data about

teaching and learning• Acts as a springboard for professional

development based on data• Provides a vehicle to implement sustained

school improvement• Helps educators become reflective

9

Why use technology for walkthroughs?

• Wanted documentation of the number of eWalks completed– By each administrator– By teacher– By classroom– By grade level– By content area– By building

• Wanted consistency by those conducting walkthroughs (administrators, teachers)

• Wanted to be able quantify and display data

10

Steps in Our Process• Decided to do walkthroughs• Determined we wanted to use

technology to assist• Researched software available

– MX-Web (e-Walks)– McCrel (Power Walkthroughs)– RTV 360 3D Walkthroughs– eCOVE– Observe4Success– Software Quality Assurance

Findings from Year 2 eWalk Data• Administrators need to continue to

develop a common understanding of what the items on the template mean/look like

• Continue to conduct team walkthroughs• Continue to vary the time of day and day

of the week for team walkthroughs• Share the data from walkthroughs with

teachers in a non-evaluative manner (e.g. coaching)

• Plan professional development based on data from eWalks

35

Heading into Year 3 with eWalks

• Continue eWalks– Team eWalks– Individual administrator eWalks

• Bring new superintendent up-to-speed on eWalks and instructional rounds

• Sending having conversations about the visit• Regular administrative team conversations about what

we’re seeing as a district or building.• Focus on the implementation of professional

development.• Building principals will share Year 3 eWalk data with

teachers

• Sharing completed template in a CONVERSATION

Other Information• Ability to enter comments on walk

through• Ability to edit after leaving classroom• Other types of reports available• Ability to print reports• Ability to save walkthroughs as PDFs

36

Other Information• Ability to email reports (and walk

throughs)—my bias is not to do this

Involving Teachers in WalkThroughs

• Question: Should we involve teachers in conducting walkthroughs?

• Question: If so, how do we involve teachers in walkthroughs?

Another perspective

Engaging Teachers in Classroom Walkthroughs, Kachur et al38

Considering walkthroughs?• If your school or district was contemplating using

“Walkthroughs” the following needs to be planned—• What is the purpose(s) for your walkthroughs?• Who will participate in walkthroughs?• The frequency of walkthroughs?• What data will be collected?• How will the data be collected?• What will be done with the data?• What role will conferencing play?• What PD will be needed? By whom?• What connection is there to the CC?• How does this fit with the new evaluation

model? 39

40

QUESTIONS TO PONDER…

What role could walkthroughs and/or eWalks play… …in the curriculum?…in the Common Core?…in your school or district?…in the evaluation process?
