Branching

Overview

Branching means users take different paths thru movie(s), depending on their actions:– Invisibly, based on interactivity features like

click boxes or answers to questions.

– Visibly, by clicking on buttons with different targets, or in response to questions.

Linear Branching

Basically none.– Users’ answers and actions are recorded for

processing at the end of the movie but users go through the movie in a straight line.

Multi-Path Branching

Depends on users’ actions. – Can branch within and between movies.

– Where the real power lies…

Multi-Path Branching Options

Continue. Go to previous (or next) slide. Jump to slide. Open URL or file. Open other project. Send e-mail to. Execute Javascript. No action (unavailable for question slides).

Quiz Reporting Screen

To specify your LMS and define what gets reported to

the LMS and how.

Enable reporting… – Turns on all options except the Report Pass or Fail options.– To turn these on, select any LMS option other

than Adobe Connect Server.

LMS options:– Adobe Connect Server – An enterprise-level

virtual meeting room with an LMS component.» Formerly Macromedia Breeze.

– AICC (Aviation Industry CBT Committee) – Old (1988) but still common standard.

» See www.aicc.org.

– SCORM (Shareable Content Object Reference Model) – Newer standard replacing AICC.

» See www.adlnet.gov

» Manifest – Displays a Manifest dialog box to create and control the SCORM manifest file.

– Most tools support AICC and/or SCORM.

– Questionmark Perception – LMS product.

– E-mail – Sends tracking and scoring data as a comma-delimited file to an email address via an email client like Outlook.

» You can pull the file into a spreadsheet for further processing.

» Useful if you don’t have an LMS in-house, but you must code and maintain the processing.

» Doesn’t seem to work with web mail.

Report Pass or Fail options:– Complete/Incomplete, Pass/Fail – Your style.

– Report status as defined by report data – Select if you use an LMS other than Adobe Connect Server and use custom data on the manifest.

Advanced options:– LMS Customization Settings – Displays the

LMS Customization Settings dialog box.

Choose Report Data options:– Adobe Connect… – Configures data for

reporting to Adobe Connect Server.

– Quiz results only – Quiz results only.

– User access only – Whether the user opened the movie.

– Quiz results and slide views – Quiz results and whether the user viewed the slides.

– Slide views only – Whether the user viewed the slides.

– Slide view completion – If you use a SCORM-enabled LMS and pick either of the latter two options, this option lets you define what % of the slides users must view to pass.

Report Score – As score or percent. Reporting Level options:

– Report score – Only the question slide results.

– Interactions and score – Interactivity objects (click boxes, etc.) and question slide results.

Never send Resume Data – To not report users’ quiz activity.– Refer to the settings for your specific LMS.

Escape Version and Session ID – To convert these IDs to URL-encoded values.– Refer to the settings for your specific LMS.

Don’t escape characters – To support the escape version and session ID options.– Refer to the settings for your specific LMS.

What To Do With All This Stuff?

Most of these options are straightforward, with some initial research and forethought about your current configuration.– Define the LMS product or standard you use.

– Define what information you want to report.

– Define how you want to report the results.

To specify basic settings about the quiz and how users can move through it and get feedback.

Name – Unique name for the quiz. Required – To specify whether the quiz is

optional or required and, if required, how. Objective ID – See LMS administrator. Interaction ID… – See LMS administrator. Shuffle answers – Randomizes the answer

sequence in each instance of the quiz.

Allow backward movement – Let viewers back up to previous slides.– Warning – Backing up from a quiz slide uses

up one of the allotted tries for that slide.

Allow user to review… – Lets viewers see quiz frames after the quiz was corrected.– Question Review Messages button customizes

the feedback messages.

Show score at end… – Displays a “report card” after the last question.– Quiz Result Messages button to customize.

Show progress – Display question number.

To define passing and failing grades

and the action to take for each.

To set options for PENS-based interoperability

for the movie.

Overview of PENS

Package Exchange Notification Services. Interoperability protocol for staging, xfer,

submission of movie “packages” between authoring tools, CMSs, LCMSs, etc.

Supports AICC and SCORM.– Search for PENS (Software) on Wikipedia.
