ABIOTIC means non-living.

Ecology - The study of the relationships between living things & their environment

ex. people & global warming

salmon & bears

Organism- A single member of a species

ex. a tree, a horse, a bee, a dog…

Species – a group of living things that are similar enough to produce offspring (babies) together

ex. – male & female horses

Population – All the individuals of a single species (ALWAYS a number)

ex. 4 horses

Community - A group of different species all living in an area

ex. Forest – trees, grass, deer, birds…

Resources – Items that are needed for survival

ex. food, water, shelter

Coexistence - To live together peacefully

ex. people & pets

Biodiversity - A wide variety of living things

ex. Rainforest, oceans

Ecosystem – The system of interactions between living things & their environments

ex. pond, forest, deserts, wetlands

Aquatic Ecosystem – An ecosystem that is based mostly or completely in water.

ex. Pond, Lake, ocean…

Terrestrial Ecosystem – An ecosystem that is based totally or mostly on land.

ex. Forest, desert, tundra

Benefit – Something that promotes survival

ex. rain – allows food to grow

Challenge – Makes survival difficult

ex. drought – not enough rain/water, predators

Macroscopic - Can be seen with the naked eye

ex. grain of sand, tree, bug

Microscopic - Very tiny, need microscope to be seen

ex. single cell, bacteria, viruses
