Thisproductisdesignedtobeinstalledindoorsonly.Youmayinstallyourunitinanoutdoorlocationsolongasitismountedinasuitableenclosurethatprotectsitfromrain,splashedwater,directsunlight,debris,andinsects.

DONOTinstallthisproductinalocationwhereitmaybesubjectedtofreezingtemperatures.Ifthewaterinsideyourtanklesswaterheaterfreezes,itcancausesevereandpermanentdamagethatisnotcoveredunderyourwarranty.

DONOTlocatethewaterheaterinalocationthatisdifficulttoaccess.

Makesurethatthewaterheaterandhotwateroutletpipeareoutofreachofchildrensotheyareunabletotamperwiththetemperaturecontrolsorinjurethemselvesbytouchingthehotwateroutletpipe.Theoutletwaterpipecangetveryhot.

ThisproductdoesNOTrequireventing.

Avoidinstallingyourtanklesswaterheaterinalocationpronetoexcessivehumidity,moisture,ordust,orinanareawhereitmaybesplashedwithwaterorotherliquids.DONOTinstallunderwaterpipesorairconditioninglinesthatmightleakorcondensemoisturethatcouldthendripontotheheater.DONOTinstallaboveelectricalboxesorjunctions.

CAUTION:Thewaterheatershouldnotbelocatedinanareawhereleakagewillresultindamagetotheareaadjacenttoitortolowerfloorsofthestructure.Wheresuchareascannotbeavoided,itisrecommendedthatasuitablecatchpan,adequatelydrained,beinstalledunderthewaterheater.

3-MOUNTINGYOURWATERHEATER

Yourtanklesswaterheatershouldbesecuredtothemountingsurfacewith4screws(minimum1-inchlong)usingthebuilt-inmountingbracketsoneachsideoftheheater.Makesurethatthemountingsurfaceissolidandsecure,andensurethattheunitislevelpriortosecuringthescrews.Foreaseofinstallationandservicing,werecommendthatthisproductbeinstalledinanuprightpositionwiththeinletandoutletwaterconnectionsatthebottomoftheunitfortheECO18,ECO24,ECO27,andECO36,andwiththeinletandoutletwaterconnectionsontheleftandrightsidesoftheunitfortheECO8andECO11.

4-PLUMBINGINSTALLATION

Pleasefollowallplumbinginstructionscarefully.Werecommendthatthisproductbeinstalledbyalicensedandqualifiedplumberinaccordancewithallapplicablenational,state,provincial,andlocalplumbingcodes.

InstallationInstructions

STEP1:ConnecttheHOTWATERlinetothewaterheaterOUTLETlocatedontheleftsideoftheheaterwhenfacingunit.ConnecttheCOLDWATERlinetothewaterheatermarkedINLETontherightsidewhenfacingunit.STEP2:Aftertighteningbothfittingsatthewaterheater,openseveralhotwaterfaucetsandallowwatertorunthoughthewaterheaterforatleast2to3minutes.ThisprocesspurgesalltheairfromthewaterlinesandMUSTbeperformedpriortoturningonthepowerattheunit.FAILURETOFOLLOWTHISSTEPCANCAUSEPERMANENTDAMAGETOTHEHEATINGELEMENTS.Ifanymaintenanceisperformedonthewaterheaterorthehome’splumbingsystemthatmayintroduceairintotheplumbingpipes,itisimportanttoturnthepowerofftothewaterheaterandpurgetheairoutofthelinesbeforeallowingtheunittopowerup.STEP3:Carefullyinspectallconnections,unions,andthepressurereliefvalve(ifinstalled)forleaks.

IMPORTANTNOTES:

1. Donotsolderanypipeswithunitconnectedtopipes–heatfromsolderingmaydamagetheflowsensor.Doingsowillvoidthewarranty.

2. Thisautomatictanklesswaterheaterisequippedwithbothcomputer-controlledandelectro-mechanicalautoresettingthermostatswitchesforhigh-limitedtemperatureprotection.Sincethisproductdoesnotuseastoragetank,theuseofatemperaturepressurereliefvalve(T&P)isnotrequiredformostinstallations.ULStandard499doesNOTrequirethatapressurereliefvalvebeused.However,aT&Pvalvemayberequiredtomeetinstallationcodesinyourarea.Ifoneisrequired,installthepressurereliefvalveinaccordancewithlocalcodesandensurethatitoperatescorrectlyandthatairispurgedfromthevalvepriortoinstallingthewaterheater.WhenconnectingtoFlexorHighTemperatureCPVCpipe,werecommendthataT&Pvalvebeusedforaddedsafety.Pleasenote:InstallationsintheCommonwealthofMassachusettsandStateofKentuckyrequireapressurereliefvalve.Pleasecheckyourlocalinstallationcodesforanyspecialrequirements.

3. Themaximumoperatingwaterpressureis150PSI.Ifthewaterpressureishigher,apressurereducingvalvemustbeinstalledonthemainincomingwatersupplylinepriortoinstallingtheelectrictanklesswaterheater.

4. Flexiblewaterheaterhosesarerecommendedtobeusedwithyourwaterheateraspartoftheinstallation.Whenconnectingtheinletwaterpipetotheunit,makesuretouseawrenchtoholdtheunit’sconnection,andanotherwrenchtotighten,sothattheflowsensorontheunitwillnotbeloosenedordamaged.Seriousinternaldamagetothewaterheatercanoccuriftheinletoroutletconnectionsareovertightenedorifsolderconnectionsweremade.

5. Werecommendthatamanualshut-offvalve(ballvalve)isinstalledontheinletandoutletofthewaterheatersothatthereisaconvenientshut-offpointavailableintheeventthatfuturemaintenanceorservicingisrequired.Itisextremelyimportanttoflushthelinestoeliminateallplumbingpasteorresidueinthelinescausedbyanyweldingorsolderingbeforeconnectingpipestothewaterheater.

Werecommendthatallthewaterpipesorhoseswithin3feetoftheinletandoutletconnectionsberatedforhightemperatureapplicationswitha150°Fminimum.

EcoSmartrecommendsthatthisproductbeinstalledbyalicensedandqualifiedelectricianinaccordancewithallapplicablenational,state,provincial,andlocalelectricalcodes.Aswithallelectricalappliances,undernocircumstancesshouldyouattempttoinstall,repairordisassemblethiswaterheaterwithoutfirstshuttingoffallpowertotheunitdirectlyatthefuseorbreakerbox.Makesuretoshutoffallbreakers.SERIOUSBODILYINJURYORDEATHCOULDOCCURIFYOUIGNORETHISWARNING.

Allwiring(wiregauge)andcircuitprotection(breakers)mustcomplywiththeU.S.NationalElectricalCode(NEC)intheUSA,ortheCanadianElectricalCode(CEC)inCanada.Failuretodosocouldresultinpropertydamageand/orpersonalinjury,andvoidyourwarranty.Note:TheCanadianElectricalCodegenerallyrequiresthatallsupplywiresandcorrespondingcircuitprotectionusedfordomestichotwaterheatingandhydronicheatingapplicationsbesizedtoaminimumof125%ofthemaximumcurrentratingoftheheater(seemodelspecificationsbelowfordetails).

Beforeinstallingthisproduct,ensurethatthehomehassufficientelectricalpoweravailabletohandlethemaximumamperageloadoftheapplicablemodel.

STEP1:Takeeachwirepairandconnectthemtoonebreaker(seewiringdiagram).MakesurethateachbreakerisconnectedwithoneblackwireandoneredwireSTEP2:Usingasuitablewiregaugethatmeetsallapplicableelectricalcodesforthesizeofthebreakersused,runthecorrectsetsofwirefromthehome’smainbreakerpaneltothetanklesswaterheater.STEP3:Aseparategroundconductorforeachincomingcircuitisrequired.STEP4:DOUBLECHECKtheelectricalconnectionstomakesuretheyarecorrectandthatallwireconnectionsaretightandsecure.Alsoconfirmthatthecorrectbreakersizeandwiregaugehasbeenusedandconfirmthattheunithasbeenconnectedtoagroundinaccordancewithapplicablecodes.STEP5:Confirmthatalltheairhasbeenpurgedfromthewaterlinespriortoturningonpowertotheunit.RefertoSTEP2intheplumbinginstallationsection.

Operatingyournewtanklesswaterheaterissimilartousinganytraditionalwaterheatingsystem.However,itisveryimportantthatyoucarefullyreadallofthesetupproceduresandoperatinginstructionsandtipstoensurethemaximumperformanceandenergysavingsfromyournewwaterheater.WerecommendthatallmembersofthehouseholdreadtheseGeneralOperatingInstructions.

Howyournewwaterheaterworks:Yourtanklesswaterheaterdoesnotstorehotwaterlikeaconventionaltank-typewaterheater.Itcontainshighpoweredheatingelementsthatarecapableofheatingwateron-demand.Assoonasyouturnonahotwaterfaucet,asophisticatedflowsensorrecognizesthatyouhaveturnedonthewater.Thissensormeasuresflowratewhileanothersensormeasurestheincomingwatertemperature.Thisinformationistransmittedcontinuallytothecomputerlogiccontrolswhichdecidehowmuchpowertosendtotheheatingelementstoheatthewatertoyourdesiredtemperature.Oncethewaterfaucetisturnedoffyourwaterheaterwillturnoffaswell.

8-MAINTENANCE

Toensuremaximumperformanceofyourwaterheaterandtoreducetheriskofawaterleak,werecommendthefollowingmaintenance:

Inspecttheconnectionsontheinletandoutletofthewaterheateratleastonanannualbasisforanysignsofdamageorfailure.Anysignsofdamage,cracks,leakageorweaknessshouldbeaddressed.Takecarenottoovertightentheconnections.Seriousinternaldamagetoyourwaterheatercanoccurifyouovertightenthewaterheaterconnectionsattheunit.

Crossedwires. Ifit’sanewinstallation,haveyourelectriciandoublecheckthewiring.Ispossiblethatthewiringisincorrect.

Voltagelessthan240volts.

Theheatingelementsonyourwaterheateraredesignfor240volts.Whenusedwithalowervoltage,theyproducelessheatingpower.Youmayneedtoupgradetoalargermodel.

Mixingtoomuchcoldwater.

Youdonotneedtomixasmuchcoldwaterwithyourtanklesswaterheatercomparedtowhenyouuseaconventionalwaterheater.Youmayalsohaveananti-scaldfeatureonyourfaucetthatismixingcoldwater.Thesetypesoffaucetscanusuallybeadjustedtoreducetheamountofcoldwatermixed.

Thewatertemperatureatthefaucetislessthanthetemperaturesettingofmywaterheater.

Voltagelessthan240volts.

Thecomputerchipsinyourtanklesswaterheaterareprogrammedwiththeexpectationthatyourincominglinevoltageis240volts.Ifyouhavelessthan240volts,itmayaffectthereadingonyourwaterheater’sdigitaldisplayandcauseittoreadslightlyhigherthantheactualoutputtemperature.Tocompensateforthis,increasethesettingonyourwaterheaterifyouneed/wanthotterwater.

Anti-Scaldpressure/balancingvalveortemperingvalve.

Yourfaucetmayhaveananti-scaldfeatureoratemperingvalvethatautomaticallymixescoldwaterevenwhenyouturnyourcontrolleverorhandletofullhot.Thesedevicesareusuallyadjustablesoyoucanturnoffthecoldmixcompletely.Youcancompensateforthisbyincreasingthesettingonyourwaterheaterifyouneed/wanthotterwater.
