Bad credit record can ruin the chance of securing a good jobECHO REPORTER>>news@myecho.co.za
SECURINGa job or even a promo-tion can be difficult because of thestatusofyourcredit report, sosaidcredit ombud Manie van Schalk-wyk.
The National Credit Act (NCA)makes provision for employers tocheck a candidate’s credit statuswhen they apply for a job that re-quires trust and honesty and en-tailsthehandlingofcashorfinanc-es she said.
This is especially applicable topeople applying for positions inthe financial sector or senior posi-tions within an organisation.
“EventhoughRegulation18(c)oftheactwasspecificallydesignedto assess the suitability of candi-dates inpositionswhere itmattersmost,we still find that peoplewhoapply for almost any position aresubjected to credit bureau checksas part of their security clearance.
“Another common practice isthat consumers are pressured bypotential employers, through re-cruitment agents, to sign consentforaccessingoftheircreditbureauinformation as part of the recruit-ment process even though the po-sition is not in finance.
“This practice has seen manyqualifying candidates miss out onopportunities of employment. We
need to start educating human re-sources departments, as well asrecruitment agents, who are re-sponsible for conducting checkson employees.
“In that way they will under-standwhen it is permissible to re-quest a credit report. Once theyhave done so, they will be able toassess credit reports correctlywhen doing employment checks,”he added.
He said some candidates maybe turned down for a job becauseof minor negative listings on theircredit reports. “Different negativelistings bear different degrees ofseriousness. It is therefore veryimportant that both HR staff and
recruitment agents are trained toassess reports with the requiredprudence. The credit ombud ad-vises consumers to check theircredit records and be aware ofwhat potential employers will beable toseeonce theyrunasecurityclearance,” he said.
Consumers can contact the of-ficeof thecreditombudfor freeas-sistance on matters relating toproblems experienced with anyunfair or incorrect listings on acreditbureauaswellasanymatterpertaining to their credit agree-ments.

Mbokazi honoured for community developmentNOKULUNGA NGOBESE>>nokulungan@myecho.co.za
THE founder of the Indondo InheritorsAwards, ReverendCalebMbokaziwas on Sun-
day honoured with the Love to Live award inrecognition of being one of the country’s 20 in-fluential peoplewhomake a difference in theircommunities.
The annual campaign is an initiative of DrDanMoodleyinabidtoaddresssocial ills,espe-cially among the youth.
Mbokaziwashonoured forhis contributionin community development as the founder ofthe annual Indondo awards.
Twenty human rights awardswere given toindividuals and NGOs, this in line with thisyear’s theme of celebrating 20 years’ ofdemocracy.
Speaking to Echo about his achievement,Mbokazisaid:“IthankGodtheAlmightyforpio-neering community public-wide participatory
interaction among people in our country irre-spective of race, colour or creed.
“When I was taught by Professor HlengiweMkhize, she said that the post-liberation chal-lengewouldbetohealcommunitieswhichwerebrutalised by apartheid violence and discrimi-nation.
“Indondo attempts to heal the unseenwounds, as people arewalking around and in-sidetheyarebleedingfrombrutality inflictedinthe past. We therefore need a continuous dia-logue, engagement andmeans of social accordin order to find one another.
“People need to be heard, need to cry andbreath and find the inner peace. I am gratefulto DrMoodley, his committee and sponsors forthe unexpected award.”

Ridiculed Zuma.WorshippedMandela andrespected Mbeki
>> Ridiculing Zumais the same asridiculing Mandela,Mbeki, Luthuli, Dubeand other ANCleaders, past andpresent
A FEW days ago the ANC in KZN had amarch in eThekwini where it protestedagainst the booing of its leader, PresidentJacob Zuma.
Zuma was booed first during the commemoration of the late Nelson Mandelaand again at the recent Bafana Bafana andBrazil soccer game in Soweto.
The booing of a head of state, for whatever reason, is something that, even if onefinds distasteful, can do very little aboutas it is difficult to argue with the masses. This is because even when the masses arewrong in their understanding of an issue, they are right as they are the ones who votepoliticians in and out of power.
One of the most confusing things thathas happened within the ANC has been its
inability to protect its president from ridicule, insults and mischief, especially fromthe media. As an outsider, though a keenobserver and commentator of the goings
on in this country, it is simply a mystery, how the members and supporters of theANC have allowed every Tom, Dick or Harryto hurl abuse at Zuma, willynilly, without
to defend what is said about the ANC president in the media.
I remember a few people pleaded withcartoonist Zapiro to desist from continuingto draw Zuma’s head with a shower on top,as this was no longer relevant since thecourts had found him not guilty. In fact itwas childish to continue to caricature Zuma in that way. I have yet to see a “rightto reply” in any newspaper, responding toan article whose only aim was to embarrass him. While the reaction and attemptat protecting Zuma during that furore onthe drawing of his exposed manhood wasbetter than nothing, it did not go farenough. He did not come out of smellingof roses.
It would seem that the problems withthe ANC president seems to come morefrom internal rather than external sources,as various factions, internally, appeared towant to upstage one another. This is mostunfortunate for the party itself as well asfor most of us black people.
Without undermining the roles thatthe two other liberation movements, theBlack Consciousness Movement (BCM)andPanAfricanistsCongress(PAC)ofAzania, have played in the liberation of thiscountry, it is the ANC which eventuallyforced the then illegitimate white minorityregime to negotiate its power away, so thattoday, we have a constitutional
democracy. If those negotiations had not taken
place, it is almost certain that many of usblacks would still be treated as unwantedstepchildren in a country which is our natural backyard. Without being lyrical aboutthe ANC, it is most probably fair to say itis one single entity that we blacks, (unlessyou include the minibus taxi industry), canclaim to own.
Now I have no idea whether when theKZN ANC marched in Durban they had thatin mind, but freedomloving South Africanwould do well to take note of it.
The attack on Zuma as party presidentcannot be divorced from the attack on theANC and those of its members and supporters who stand on the sideline while thename of their leader is being draggedthrough the mud and the movement is being destroyed, are making a grave mistake.
Looked at it historically, it is in the interest of mainly the black majority, that if theday comes when the ANC is destroyed, thatday be prolonged for as long as humanlypossible.
ANC members and supporters shouldbe awake to the fact that those who ridicule Zuma, as ANC president are, at onceand the same time, ridiculing Mandela,Mbeki, Luthuli, Dube as well as every singleother ANC leader, past and present, despite their claims that they worshipMadiba and respect Mbeki.
To say this is not the same as sayingthat the ANC and its leadership should notbe criticised. It’s just that there clearly issomething seriously wrong in a setupwhere, just 20 years into democracy, people seem to reserve the most vile and destructive criticism for a movement (and itsleaders) which sacrificed much to see thatthey today live as a free people.
That’s all I am saying.
BHUNGANI KA MZOLO
mounting somekind of defence. Itis almost as ifthey told themselves that for aslong as it is nottheir names in themud, it was of noconsequence.
I vividly remember thatsoon after hiselection, Zumaurged his supporters to watchwhat the mediasaid about himand the ANC. Hespecifically pointed out opinionand feature writers as the ones toespecially pay attention to. Todate, those whocare to do so willfind that only on afew occasions hasanyone bordered

TALKINGFOOTBALL
Football is aboutplayersIThashelpedUEFAagreatdealthattheirpresi-dent is a former top footballer, club coach andnational teamcoach.Thishasahuge impact interms of understanding the needs of the game.
South Africans need to realise that a gameof football is about players. Currently, one getsthe feeling that administrators, coaches andrefereesareservingthemselves insteadof foot-ball and the players.
Players are themost important componentof the game. The majority of us fail to under-stand that without players there are no jobs.Fans and sponsors, in otherwords the fundersof football, pay theirmoneybecauseofplayers. So it is important thatwe lookafter theplayers.Themajority of us will go hungry if footballerswere to “down tools”.
A fixture list is one of the most importantdocuments in football. It gives direction to thegame and allows people to plan their lives ac-cordingly.
If football in 2014 cannot deal with basicthings such as fixtures, then Safa’s Vision 22will not be realised. People whowork in lowerlevelsofSouthAfricanfootballarevolunteeringtheirserviceseventhoughtheyhaveotherjobs, families and friends. It is important that foot-ball treat them with respect.
Provision of good service is not a favour, itis the responsibility of football’s employees.
Everything in the game revolves around90minutes of a match. I doubt that many peopleinadministrativepositionsunderstand the im-
portanceof their tasks infootballdevelopment.Poor administration affects the technical-
tactical, physical and psychological develop-ment of football adversely.Developmentisaboutpreparation.Howdoyouprepare for thematch ifyouhave towait for fix-tures toappear inanewspaperonaThursday?I firmly believe that many of our brothers andsisters need a crash course on player develop-ment in order to start appreciating their rolesmore.
They are very critical players in helpingSouth Africa develop world-class footballers.
Theyarefarmoreimportantthaneventheirpolitical masters. Players and clubs are foot-ball’s clients. Let us serve them with respect.

Second round of schools soccer challenge
CARTER and Intsika highschools, followedbyEdendaleTechnical High and St. Nicho-laswill lockhorns today in theNashua Maritzburg UnitedSchool Soccer Challenge.
The challenge officiallykicked off at the MaritzburgUnitedSportsClubonMondaywhen youngsters from 16schools in theUmgungugund-lovu region took to the field.
These aspiring soccerplayers will showcase theirskills and this tournament isthe opportunity for rural andformer model C school pupilsto play against one another ina proper format.
The winners will takehome trophies and medalsand have their kit sponsoredby Nashua.
More importantly, thegames are all closely watchedby talent scouts from Maritz-burgUnitedon the lookout forplayers to sign up for Maritz-burg United Colts, the devel-opment team for MaritzburgUnited.
“Soccer development inSouth Africa is critical to notonlythefutureofthesport, butalso to the betterment of thelives of the children in impov-erished areas for whom soc-cer provides a positive plat-form from which to grow and
excel,” said JPduToit, generalsalesmanageratNashuaMar-itzburg.
Inarecentstatement to thepress, South African FootballAssociation (Safa) presidentDanny Jordaan acknowl-edged that the developmentstructures in South Africaneed urgent attention if SouthAfrica wants to produce play-ers “capable of beating thebest in the world”.
Du Toit views the NashuaMaritzburg United FC SchoolSoccer Challenge as a big stepin therightdirection in thisre-gard.
“The truth of the matter isthatsomeof theseschools thattake part in this tournamentdon’t even have proper kits. They’ve never played on evenpitches with proper goalpostsand a linesman in an actualtournament format, so it’s ahuge deal for these kids.
“The winners from lastyear’s tournament, Mehloka-zulu Secondary, were so hon-oured that their boys won thetournament theyerectedabigmarquee at the school andheld a prize-giving ceremonyin which the players weretreatedlikeheroes, whichwasamazing to see,” said Du Toit.
Last year’s tournament re-sulted in Ryan Moon and Ay-
ren Bond from MaritzburgCollege both being awardedwith professional contractswith Maritzburg United afterbeing scouted by MaritzburgUnited’s management teamduring the tournament.
“Ourgoalwith this tourna-ment is simple – we want tokeep kids off the street andprovideaplatform for them tomake their dreams of one dayplaying professional soccer areality.
“This is the second yearthatNashuaissponsoringthisevent, butwehavebigplanstogrow this tournament goingforward,” said Du Toit.

Hope forBanyana toadvanceunder newcoachTHE newly appointed Banyana Ban-yana head coach and Netherlandsborn,VeraPauw, is thebest thing thathas happenedtoSouthAfricanwom-en’s soccer.
This is according to Safa’s techni-cal director and former senior wom-en’s team manager Fran Hilton-Smith. Smith says Pauw’s contribu-tion and presence in the country willtake SA women’s soccer to dizzyheights.
She says besides Pauw’s “colour-ful”and“heavy”CV,her internationalworkexperienceinwomen’ssoccerisgoodnews and aplus for the country.
“Pauwisnotonlygoodnewstoourwomen’s soccer but she’s the best inthis position.
“Besides her qualifications incoaching, she’sgoteverythingthatweneeded for the women’s head coach.
“Ourwomen’ssoccerteambattledforaverylongtimetogetapersonlikethisandweareall excited tohaveher. She’s a hardworker and she believesin team work and she successfullyworked in a couple of countries.
“We wanted to bring in someonewith an international experience atthehighestlevelwhocanhelptaketheteam one step further and qualify forthe World Cup,” said Hilton-Smith.
Pauwwill be taskedwith buildinga formidable team ahead of the 2015Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada.
Hilton-Smith confirmed that theformer head coach, JosephMkhonzawillnowworkfortheteamasnationalselector for all women’s teams.
Pauw hasworked as technical di-rector of the Russian Football Unionand was the country’s interim coachin 2011.
ShewasNetherlands’technicaldi-rectorandthewomen’snationalteamcoach from2004 to2010, leading thecountrytothebronzemedalintheEu-ropean Championships in Finland in2009.
“Vera comeswith vast experienceandwillassistinelevatingourlocalfe-male coaches. She will also conductworkshops with our female coacheswho have recently completed theirCAF B licence.
“Former Banyana captain Sim-phiwe Dludlu completed her UEFA Blicence inHollandandshe’soneof the
women who will be earmarked to gofurther in the coaching structures.”
In order to qualify for the WorldCup, Banyanawouldhave to finish inthetopthreeat theCAFAfricanWom-en Championships (AWC) scheduledfor October in Namibia.
However, Banyana still need toqualify for the AWC by winning itshomeandaway tiesagainstComorosIslands.
“We have a camp on 19 Marchwhere 40 national team candidateswill arrive, including the previousBanyana team.
“Vera will have to whittle themdowntoprepareforafriendlyagainstNambia, whoarethehostsoftheAWCand to prepare for our qualifiersagainst Comoros in May,” continuedHilton-Smith.
Despite the new technicalchanges, Hilton-Smith insisted Ban-yana would keep its flair on the fieldof play.
“Banyana’sstylewon’tchange. It’stheir style that has got them towherethey are.
“They qualified for the Olympicsand the African Women Champion-ships 2012, where they made itthrough to the final, and there is nopossibility of changing their style.
“Allwewant to do isworkon theirtactical acumen and their physicalability,” said Hilton-Smith.
