Using EBSCOhost as a database for

research

EBSCOhost is a series of 22 databases for magazines, journals, and other current

research. It provides information on topics such as education, health and

business.

When you open BadgerLink, you will find six different databases, each offering something different for your research, plus nine general

sources.

When you open EBSCOhost, these are just a few of your choices. Choose the

web version!

Click the databases you want to search. You can search as many or as few at a time as you want. Choosing many databases sometimes slows down the search.

Choose advanced search.

In the next screen you will see how you can change the pull-down menus to direct what EXACTLY you want to search.

This is the advanced search method. It lets YOU control exactly what you

want to search.

The first red arrow shows how many hits we got when we searched for this term. The second one shows that we marked “full text” so that we don’t get just the name (citation) of an article or the summary (abstract) of the article. We want the whole thing.

Opening the article gives you the title, author, the source (name of the magazine) and the length of the article. It will also give you other ideas for search terms under the Subject terms. The abstract is a summary of the article.

EBSCOhost lets you print the article. But you can also

email it to yourself, email it to a friend,

cite the article, export it to a bibliographic

manager, and add it to a folder.

You can decide which format you want to use. Do you need APA, AMA, or MLA? Find out from your instructor

what format they require ahead of

time.

your source, whether it is a picture, a sound bite, an interview or a government document.

Know the difference between an abstract and the full text of the article. In some journals,

the abstract can be 2-3 pages long.
