Together My sweet mother was two months short of 35 when I was born. A country girl, who had moved to the small county seat, she was connected to people in both the rural and town population. A genuine people person with a tender heart, she attended many funerals and I was always taken. It was an education for me to attend with her in the country and town. I was in a country home and the man was in a casket in the living room with nickels on his eyes. I have stood with men, in what seemed like a reunion as they told of their life since their last meeting. And that may have been at a previous funeral. Transportation and roads did not make for easy travel, even though it was greatly improved over the past 25 years. I have heard the dead spoken of with the highest regard and deep regret that they are gone. While the words may not have been said this way, the meaning was, “there will never be another like...” The first funeral that was real to me was a step-grandfather. I had visited in the home of my mother’s mother and while he and I did not do things together, I felt he was family. I was about 6. The next personal funeral was a church friend. We had sleep overs and were coming of age as young men. Riding his motorcycle to school, he was trying to keep his books from slipping off the rear fender when he drove into a train. I was 14 and served as a pallbearer. About this time, I began to sing at funerals with my father. I write all this to say, I know about death, it is not a secret. As I come to this part of my life, I am sad to hear of teachers, mentors and friends who have gone to be with the Lord. I do not regret their glorious reward, I do often think, “There will never be another like...” Which brings me to say, who are we mentoring to fill the holes of those who are passing from this life? Who will carry on the Gospel Light when you and I are gone? Charles M Clodfelter www.eastwoodchurchofchrist.org

What’s Her Name By House to House Heart to Heart Six-year-old Angie and her four-year-old brother, Joel, were sitting together. Joel giggled, sang, and talked. Finally, big sister had had enough. “You’re not supposed to talk in church.” “Why? Who’s going to stop me?” Joel asked. Angie pointed to the back of the building and said, “See those two men standing by the door? They’re hushers.”
