LENT AND EASTER

Lent and Easter celebrations in CataloniaBy students in 5th and 6th yearSchool El CastellotLa Múnia – Castellví de la MarcaCatalonia - Spain

THE OLD LENT HAS SEVEN LEGS BECAUSE THERE ARE SEVEN WEEKS IN LENT

Old Lent

The Old Lent “Vella Quaresma”is an old lady who has seven legs.

OLD LENT’S LEGS HELP US COUNT THE FORTY DAYS IN LENT.

THE OLD LENTWe cut one of her legs every Friday, until Easter. She has a small present for us each week!

On 13th April we’ll celebrate Palm Sunday and people carry palms.

We go to church to get our palms blessed.

Our palms are made of palm leaves. They can be of different colours. They’re decorated with bows and sugar crosses.

In Spain they have processions during the Holy Week. They carry big Saint sculptures along the streets. They’re very long.

EASTEREASTER

Easter cake - “Mona”• Easter is a traditional

festival. We celebrate it giving a “mona”.

• For Easter our godparents give us a chocolate cake “mona”. It’s traditional to put colourful feathers or chocolate figures.

In Catalonia we celabrate Easter. We eat a round cake with chocolate figures: Eggs, hens, balls or any popular character.

It is a cake with chocolate, cream or nothing. Usually decorated with chocolate figures, colourful feathers and chicks

My godfather gives me the “Mona” (chocolate cake) with the figure I want (Pacman for example) and my godmother gives me a present.

EASTER EGGS

We decorate real eggs with pictures related with Easter. And we write postcards.

By the way, THANK YOU for your Easter postcards. We liked them very much!!

THE “MONA”In Easter we eat “the mona “. “Mona” is the tradicional Easter cake. They are a present from godparents (uncles or grandparents usually).

It’s decorated with colourful feathers.

In the mona we put a chocolate figure.

In the old times, “mona” was not a cake but a “tortell” with real eggs on it. There were as many eggs as the child’s age.
