What is Culture?
• The beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place, or time
• A particular society that has its own beliefs, ways of life, art, etc.
• A way of thinking, behaving, or working that exists in a place or organization (such as a business, or school)
Yang Liu
• The artist and visual designer was born in China and has lived in Germany since she was 14. By growing up in two very different places with very different traditions, she was able to experience the differences between the two cultures first-hand.
Yang Liu and You (are we biased by our position in society)
• She has been living and working in an artistic community – often sheltered from the true realities of life.
• You have been living and working in an academic community – often sheltered from the true realities of life
• Is there a difference?
• Are there similarities in outlook / differences?
Assignment

• 2.Relate some examples of the picture to your daily lives. Think of life here in China and what you see watching films or TV from foreign countries… or maybe you have traveled to a foreign country.

• 4. The pictures are about 10 years old… have things changed, how will they change in the future?
