Dyscalculia“Counting Badly”

InterveneAssess - Intervene - Evaluate

Put simply a person struggles to acquire, process and retain number,….. in any, or every format…… Unless we

Meet Mollie

• Background in a nutshell• Parents don’t like maths, some of her

friends did’t like maths and her siblings didn’t like maths and its always been an uphill struggle” –P7 teacher

• Mollie doesn’t get it when you teach her mathematical concepts

• ‘Blank looks’ and long momentary lapses when asked questions.

• Mollie gets the answer correct a while after everyone else

• Our job – Assess, intervene and evaluate

• ETI say Count Read and Succeed…………

Starting Point - P.I.DPrimary School data collection take stock of what she/he can’t

do

Get the data together

• From the results collect, I have noticed some delays in her/his numeracy scores and notes highlighted by the teacher about her delays.

• Collate results from schools these might be in the form of ALFIE / PIMS /CATS as per used indicate– Verbal 92 (ss) Quantitative 73(ss) and Non-

Verbal 91 (ss) I have concerns about her maths

Now consider having your daughter tested through the SENCO for dyscalculia and very good test is the GL assessment

Please take time to note the details and information detailed on the areas to develop etc..

Now I have enough evidence to discuss with the parent in detail for further assessment using the GL Dyscalculia Screener and backup with the Schofield and Sims mental math packs and assessment tools .

I would consider this checklist produced by Schofield and Sims not as a test but a starting point and way forward alongside the

ALFIE and GL screener …

You can be sure if 7 years of primary school hasn’t worked then its time to throw the kitchen sink in……..

Remember the science … Neurological studies have identified differences in the brain activities with people who have Dyscalculia……So this is what I am currently doing

I.E.P.• Plan of Action• Teachers notified and asked

to contribute • Parents provided with

supporting information and numeracy packs accordingly

• Targets agreed and established

• Pupil informed and supported as part of plan of action

More stuff……….

Activity home pack• Remember words and pictures

say much more than numbers to a child with Dyscalculia….. – Use the Standard Ways of Working

• Background changed to suit visual enhancing, repeat regularly, hands on activities as much as possible and affirm

• Same applies in mathematics except allow so much more time its not about getting the correct answer fastest it’s about getting the correct answer independantly

Materials Available• Schofield and Sims• P1 and P2• Withdrawal three times a week• Extra teacher/parent support • Use the homework club and

set a weekly problem to solve or task

• Collapse their timetable should the need be sufficient

Evaluate

• Track- allocate LSA to monitor and track pupils application and use of strategies

• Re-test using checklist• End of year assessment with

streamlined focused approach to individuals who require extra time

• End of year assessment ALFIE• Observe the pupil in maths• Get teachers feedback• Reports are available from

Mangahigh, Mathletics, Mymaths and Kerboodle.

Input your information in your review of the IEP and your ready for next year.
