OBJECTIVES
Explain the concept and purpose of a marketing decision support system.
Define marketing research and explain its importance to marketing decision making.
Describe the steps involved in conducting a marketing research project.
Discuss the profound impact of the Internet on marketing research.
Discuss the growing importance of scanner-based research.
INTRODUCTION
Computerized decision support systems became practical with the development of minicomputers.
The implementation of such systems begins in the mid-1960s.
Researchers used multiple frameworks to help build and understand these systems.
Processing (OLAP), Business Intelligence, group DSS, conferencing and groupware, document management all of these technologies have been used to support decision making

HISTORY
According to Keen (1978) the concept of decision support has evolved from two main areas of research:
The theoretical studies of organizational decision making done at the Carnegie Institute of Technology during the late 1950s and early 1960s.
The technical work on interactive computer systems, mainly carried out at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the 1960s.
MIS - DSS
In the 1970s DSS was described as "a computer based system to aid decision making".
In 1987 Decision support system is credited with significantly reducing travel delays by aiding the management of ground operations at various airports, beginning with O'Hare International Airport in Chicago and Stapleton Airport in Denver Colorado.
Information Systems researchers and technologists have built and investigated Decision Support Systems (DSS) for approximately 40 years.

DEFINITION OF DSS
A Decision Support System (DSS) is an umbrella term used to describe any computer application that enhances the user’s ability to make decisions.
MIS - DSS
DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM – WHY?
Fast computation
Enhance productivity
Data Transmission
Better decision
Competitive Edge
MIS - DSS
CHARACTERISTICS AND CAPABILITIES OF DSS
Semi-structured programs
For managers at different level
For groups and individuals
Interdependent or sequential decision
MIS - DSS
Support intelligence, design and choice
Adaptability and flexibility
Effectiveness not efficiency
Human control the machine
Ease of construction by end uses
Modeling and analysis
CHARACTERISTICS AND CAPABILITIES OF DSS

CLASSIFYING DSS
There are several ways to classify DSS applications. Not every DSS fits neatly into one category, but a mix of two or more architecture in one.
Hollsopple and Whinstone classify DSS into the following six frameworks:
Text-Oriented DSS, Spreadsheet-Oriented DSS, Solver-Oriented DSS, Rule-Oriented DSS & Compound DSS.
MIS - DSS
The support given by DSS can be separated into three distinct, interrelated categories :-
Personal Support,
Group Support
Organizational Support.
MIS - DSS
DSS components may be classified as:
Inputs: Factors, numbers, and characteristics to analyze
User Knowledge and Expertise: Inputs requiring manual analysis by the user
Outputs: Transformed data from which DSS "decisions" are generated
Decisions: Results generated by the DSS based on user criteria

DSS AT PEPSI CO
MIS - DSS
PepsiCo and Sedgwick James Inc, the world second largest insurance broker, developed a risk management DSS to help minimize PepsiCo’s losses from accident, theft and other causes. Every week, Sedgwick loads the latest casualty claims data from the nation’s leading insurance carriers into a DSS database resident on IBM RS /6000 server in the PepsiCo intranet. The database is then accessed by mangers and analysts using desktop PCs and remote laptops equipped with the INFORM risk management system. Both the RS/6000 server and local PCs use information builders’ middleman to provide PepsiCo mangers and business analysts with transparent data access from a variety of hardware/software configuration.
