BARGARH : An Overview
Bargarh is one among the western district of Orissa and came into existence on 1st April 1993. It
is bordered by the State of Chhatisgarh in the west, by Sambalpur district in the east, Bolangir in the
south and flanked by the district of Jharsuguda in the north. The South-east and South-west border of
district are flanked by the district Sonepur and Nuapada respectively.
The district of Bargarh lies between 20° 43’ to 21° 41’ North latitude and 82° 39’ to 83° 58’ East
longitude. It can be divided into 3 natural divisions, (1) Bargarh Plain (2) Borasambar (3) Ambabhona &
Lakhanpur. The greater portion is an open plain of considerable fertility drained by the Danta and the Jira
river, tributaries of Mahanadi. To the north of this plain runs the Barapahar range of hills and to the
south-west lies the valley of river Ang. The land area of Bargarh is 5837 Sq. Kms., which is 3.75 per cent of
the total land area of the state of Orissa. In terms of physical size, it is the 12th largest district of Orissa.
The district has two sub-divisions namely Bargarh and Padampur. There are two NACs and one
Municipality in the district. The district is divided into 5 MLA constituencies.
