DOHA

QatarNovember 2008

En route to Jordan, we had an 8-hour transit at Doha, the capital city of QatarDoha’s economy is built on the revenue the country has made from its oil & natural gas industriesIt is a city with an 80% immigrant population

Since we reached Doha very early in the morning, we took an early morning city tourOur first stop was the camel marketWell, the place did not smell very nice

Then to the vegetable market where everything was so neatly displayed

The venue of the 2006 Asian Games

Doha Racing & Equestrian Club is the home of horse racing in QatarMeetings take place every Thursday during the racing season, which runs from October to May, but gambling is not permittedThese are the renowned Arabian horses

Of another breed—European?

Getting the hoof repaired Getting a blow dry after a shower

The Old Souq (“market”) was rather interesting

The buildings have an unfinished feel with rafters jutting out unevenly

Decorative doors & locks

An Automated Teller Machine secured with locks

A shop selling musical instruments

An open-air cafe

The market sells almost anything: trunks, water pipes (“shishas”), sandals, musical instruments, spices, incense, etc, . . .

even vultures

Words to describe this market: colourful, . . .

unfinished, . . .

& traditional (like the lady in black)

Our last stop was the Doha Bay with a good view of the Doha skyline
