The United States is made up of 50 States, that each have their own separate government.

A state can be defined by the territory, or one of the territories, of a government.

Each state has their own capital, that is the headquarters of their state government.

There were 13 original colonies, and when the United States broke away from Britain those colonies became the first States of America.

With the expansion westward the United States grew to 38 states in just 100 years of being an independent country.

Since the beginning of the 20th century the United States has added 5 states, with the most recent being Alaska in 1959.
