Do Now!• A boat is crossing the width of a river at 15 m/s and traveling east. The current of the river is pushing the boat out of its path and increases its velocity to 20 m/s. What is the velocity of the current if the current is flowing from the south to the north?

Component Vectors

Part 2

Components of vectors in real life situations.

• Any time an object moves through space we can visualize it as a vector quantity.

• If an object goes forward and up it will have two vectors to its motion

Component Vectors at right angles

• If we have multiple vectors that only meet at right angles, we can use vector addition and the pythagorean theorem to solve for our resultant.

Try it!

• If Olaf Attajoke walks 3.5 meters south then 5.1 meters west and then another 2.8 meters south, what is his resultant displacement?

• 7.8 m SW

Trigonometry in Physics

• Objects will not always be moving at right angles.

• In order to solve real life situational problems we will need to use Trigonometry.

• SOH CAH TOA

Application• Hans Free plays middle linebacker for his college football team.

During one play in last Friday night's game against Wassamata U., he made the following movements after the ball was snapped on third down.

• First, he back-pedaled in the southern direction for 2.6 meters.

• He then shuffled to his left (west) for a distance of 2.2 meters.

• Finally, he made a half-turn and ran downfield a distance of 4.8 meters in a direction of 240° counter-clockwise from east (30° W of S) before finally knocking the wind out of Wassamata U’s wide receiver. Determine the magnitude and direction of Max's overall displacement.
