A ceramics studio — 323CLAY — has made its home on the indepen-dence Square — featuring acclaimed potter Steven Hill, whose work has been admired nationally and interna-tionally, in dozens of books and maga-zines, and whom hundreds of people have gladly paid to attend his work-shops, classes and demonstrations.
“Having Steven Hill as a resident potter at 323CLAY is like being able to jam with your all-time favorite musi-cian,” said kimberly Walsh, Studio director. “Many of us are friends and followers of his who worked under his direction when he co-founded red Star Studios with his wife, Susan Hill, celebrated fiber artist, in the Crossroads district of kansas City in the 1990s. This group of potters has
brought a new aspect to downtown independence — an art district.”
Along with Steven Hill and kimberly Walsh, studio owner david Lee and private studio potters Tara dawley, George Chrisman, Carolyn Summers, Maria r. Morales, and Cindy buehler have claimed 323CLAY as a place to create ceramic magic and to share it with others.
“We anticipate ‘Wednesdays with Steven’ to be one of the most popu-lar classes,” Walsh said. “These classes will start on August 3; people who are interested in beginner or intermediate classes can call 323CLAY to make res-ervations.”
323CLAY has not only private stu-dios for its full-time studio members but also shared-studio and classroom space, and is equipped for demon-strations, workshops, and interactive sessions, for everything from hand building, to throwing and glazing, to kiln-firing the finished pot. Steven Hill will demonstrate firing through oxida-tion, a process which produces results equally as spectacular as reduc-

After having traveled nearly 8,000 miles, across the continents, hundreds of Chinese scholar rocks have found a new home at design Living on the independence Square. owners Chris-tina Leung and Marc roling have painstakingly brought these rocks, as well as porcelain paintings, pre-cious stones, vases and other unique and unusual art pieces to the United States to share their passion with the public.
“We travel overseas and hand-pick jewelry and art for the store including a large private collection of Scholars rock from a Taiwanese collector,” said roling. “due to our relationships with direct importers, we are able to be competitive with our prices on our art compared with europe and the east and West coast of United States, where these types of art are better known.”
early records of Chinese scholar’s rocks dates back to the Song dynasty (960-1279) in China, which have been admired as a form of abstract sculp-tural art and are frequently utilized as the Zen or harmonizing feature in Asian gardens. Scholar rocks also served as artistic inspiration for early traditional Asian landscape paintings.
The art of Scholar’s rocks, also referred as Gonghshi or viewing Stones, are an appreciation of natural rock formations without artificial carv-ings. Scholar rocks of every shape and size, that overflow inside of design Living, features only a fraction of the complete inventory. The complete collection can be viewed by appoint-ment.
“Chinese have mastered the art of balancing the Gongshi with hand-carved rosewood bases specifi-cally made for each rock for optimal viewing,” Leung said. “The Chinese admired the rocks for its aesthetics that suggests great age and resem-bles mountainous-scapes, natural wonders of the world around them as well as animals and people.”
“our massive collection of Chinese Scholar’s rocks are museum quality,” roling said, “but our passion for these rocks is more than just monetary. They are mystical, inspirational forms of art and we want to find them homes where they will be appreciated for their inspiration and beauty.”
design Living also features other inventory including decorative vases ranging in size from two feet to 12 feet tall, hand painted porcelain paint-ings and room partitions set in hand-carved rosewood frames. other hand carved items include statues, tea tables, pedestals made from woods found on the other side of the world, such as sandalwood, rosewood and yellow-wood.
Similar to other jewelry stores, design Living also offers a large

Walk in Harry Truman’s footsteps as you discover downtown Independence,
Truman’s old stomping grounds. At age 14 his first job was at
Clinton’s Soda Fountain, still in business today on the Square.
“I can remember the first $3.00 I received for working a week from seven
o’clock until school time and from four o’clock until ten at night and
all day Saturday and Sunday. I had to mop the floor every morning, make
ice cream for sodas, and wait on the customers,” said Harry Truman.
After his time in office, Truman returned to his family home in
Independence just off the Square. He walked daily through the streets
of downtown Independence, stopping along the way to meet with fellow
citizens and eventually making his way up the street to his Presidential
Library.
Historic Downtown Independence offers visitors everything from shopping
and dining to a historical look at those who shaped our nation. Please
take the time to visit this extraordinary location that Harry Truman
called home.
Sincerely,
Dr. Michael J. Devine, PhD
Director Harry S. Truman Library and Museum

sary as a potter,” Hill said. “And it still amazes me. i’m excited to have my studio at 323CLAY and the opportunity to draw inspiration from fellow potters.”
Steven Hill has offered workshops in every state across the country, as well
as in italy and Canada, and his work has been featured in more than 150 invitational exhibits internationally. Find-ing his passion for pottery through writ-ing as well, Steven is also well known for his articles on the art of pottery.
