TEXTToday’s modern computer can do a lot of things .Today’sComputer such as I B M’s computer Deep Blue learns something new every time,it plays a chess game,and itdoesn’t get tired,and it never forgets a move.(1) Another morden computer program is Hal. Hal is not a “chatbox”,this computer can speak a language in a simple way but without real understanding. Hal learns and speaks in the same way as humans learn and speak.(2) Hal’s teachers are teaching Hal to speak English just as aparent teaches a child.They are proud of Hal.(3)They say:“Well done” when Hal solves a problem correctly.(4)If Hal gets an answer wrong,they will click a mouse tellm it the correct answer .

Hal’s language level is the same as an 18-month-old baby and its vocabulary is growing fast. (5)• Hal can make words into sentences.(6)• Hal knows that monkeys eat bananas.(7)• Hal calls his teacher “mummy”.• It also enjoys games and bedtime stories as a

child.(8)• “I’ll read you a story later”,his teacher

promises.• Hal replies:”Thank you ,mummy!”
