Engine Control Systems (ECS) A Catalytic Solutions Inc. Company
•! Market leader in emission control solutions
for non-automotive applications
Diesel Particulate Matter •! "Particulate matter," also known as particle pollution or PM, is
a complex mixture of extremely small particles and liquid droplets. Particle pollution is made up of a number of components, including acids (such as nitrates and sulfates), organic chemicals, metals, and soil or dust particles.
•! The size of particles is directly linked to their potential for causing health problems. EPA is concerned about particles that are 10 micrometers in diameter or smaller because those are the particles that generally pass through the throat and nose and enter the lungs. Once inhaled, these particles can affect the heart and lungs and cause serious health effects. EPA groups particle pollution into two categories:
–! "Inhalable coarse particles," such as those found near roadways and dusty industries, are larger than 2.5 micrometers and smaller than 10 micrometers in diameter.
–! “Fine particles," such as those found in smoke and haze, are 2.5 micrometers in diameter and smaller. These particles can be directly emitted from sources such as forest fires, or they can form when gases emitted from power plants, industries and automobiles react in the air.

U.S. Mobile Source PM in 2010 Total PM Projection = 621,000 tons / yr.
Total NOx Projection = 7.8 million tons / yr.
EPA verifications are specific as to the
percentage(%) of PM, HC and CO reduction.
For example, the ECS Purifilter™ Passive
DPF is EPA verified to reduce:
Particulate Matter (PM) - 90%
Hydrocarbons (HC) - 85%
Carbon Monoxide (CO) - 75%

Pollutant Reduction Classification
PM
< 25% Not verified
> 25% Level 1
> 50% Level 2
> 85%, or < 0.01 g/bhp-hr Level 3+
CARB verifications only indicate Level of PM reduction.
The same emission retrofit technology may be verified by both the
EPA and CARB.
There are significant differences in complying with each
verification and, importantly, in pollutant(s) verified as reduced.
Most states, except California, may accept either EPA or CARB
verification of emission retrofit technology.
California will only accept CARB Level 3+ verification for retrofits.
In some (very rare) instances, CARB may accept Best Available
Control Technology (BACT) but never less than Level 2.
Emission regulations are subject to change. Check the
appropriate (CARB or EPA) website for current rules.

Important Footnotes
•! Emission Standards are based strictly upon the manufacture
date of the engine and the engine family.
•! Example: The 2011 model year for new vehicles began in July
2010. A 2011 model year vehicle may have an engine
manufactured in 2010 or 2011.
•! Retrofitting an engine does not change its certification.
Installation of verified retrofit technology only reduces the
pollutant(s) as shown in the verification document.
More Footnotes (generalizations)
•! Emission retrofit devices are verified for engines manufactured during
specific time periods, e.g., 1991 – 2004, 1994 – 2006, etc. Some
CARB verifications reference Tier Levels for off-road engines.
•! All CARB approved devices are only verified for installation on
specific engine families.
•! Refer to the approval document for the specifics of verification.
•! Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOC) are not verified for off-road applications (except Port &/or intermodal for specific engine
families).
•! Passive Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) have exhaust temperature
duty cycle requirements.
•! There are limitations as to which emission retrofit technology may be
installed on engines equipped with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR).
AZ Purifiers™ and AZ Purimufflers™
•! DOC design is flexible
•! In-line DOC- a separate converter unit typically installed between the engine and existing muffler
•! Purimuffler™: direct fit catalytic muffler or integrated generic
•! Virtually maintenance free
•! ECS’ Diesel Oxidation Catalysts provide 40%
Particulate Matter (PM) Reduction for 1991 –
2003 Navistar and Cummins engines included in
EPA verification.
•! Cost effectiveness is important.
•! When installed with its Closed Crankcase
Ventilation System (CCV), ECS’ Diesel Oxidation
Catalyst provides 40% Particulate Matter
Reduction for all makes of 1991 – 2004 engines
included in EPA verification.

Table 2.1.c). Purifilter and Purifilter Plus Sizing for 1994 and newer highway engines
Purifilter Plus DPFs are sized using the same chart and have the letter “P” in the third position. For example, the Purifilter model SC23 changes to SCP23 when the Purifilter Plus is specified.
*For four stroke engines with turbocharging and charge air cooling. **Overlap in sizing required to address greater exhaust flow of higher power versions as well as dual exhaust vehicles.

Purifilter Plus Use Proactive Use
The equipment is data logged to determine a proactive
regeneration schedule, based upon observed backpressure
characteristics.
Interval may be: •! weekly, bi-weekly, every 100 engine hours, every preventative
maintenance check, etc.
Reactive Use
The equipment is plugged at the end of the day/use when the BP
Monitor indicates a Yellow Alarm Condition (Schedule Filter
Service) or upon Red Alarm Condition (Service DPF now).
