Tailor-made vacuumCompact diaphragm pumping units increase efficiencyin chemical and pharmaceutical laboratories

The NT and Vario series chemistry pumping units have opened up numerouspossibilities for more efficient and cost-effective vacuum processes. With a

wide range of performance options based on different suction properties,

ultimate vacuum as well as standard or Vario configurations, the manufactureris able to offer tailor-made solutions for almost any vacuum application inthe chemistry lab,

In view of the increasing scope of appli-cations in today's modern chemical andpharmaceutical laboratories, this can oftenmean a wide range of equipment isrequired. With iab space and process timeat a premium - and with muitiple vacuumapplications that typically include fil-tration, evaporation, drying, concentration, etc. each necessitating their own individualvacuum - more rnnovative solutions arecalled for to address these issues. With this in mind, Vacuubrand's NT andVario series therefore offer improved ener-gy efficiency, enhanced environmental anduser friendliness and more compact andspace saving designs. The systems can aisobe adapted automatically to individualprocess requirements, thus integrating thevacuum process seamlessly into work rou-tines and reducing the need for constantprocess monitoring and supervision.Owing to their unique design technoiogy,

chemistry diaphragm pumping units al-ready offer a high degree of economic, eco-logical and performance advantages: forone thing, they are oil-free and as such gen-erate no contaminated waste oil. In addi-tion, the modular, integrated system com-ponents allow simple solvent recovery andvacuum regulation. The performance efficiency of chemistrypumps depends on their suction propertiesand finai vacuum (also with gas ballast) as

well as on the quality and consistent oper-ation of the individual components.

Increased performance yetlower operating costs

The NT pumping series (500,600 and 3000)

unveiled at Achema 2009 offers many im-proved features while maintaining the tra-ditionally first-rate chemical resistance and

condensate compatibility. It also boasts anincredibly long life based on the specialplanar PTFE diaphragm in conjunctionwith Vacuubrand's stability core technol-ogy. All gas-contacting parts in the pumpare made from a thick layer of highlychemically resistant, fluorinated plastic, surrounding a solid stability core. Vacuu-brand consciously rejected the use ofplastics such as PEEK at the heart of thepump, as experience has shown them to beunsuitable for many chemistry appli-cations.The result of all this technology is an excel-lent and consistent final vacuum, even withthe gas ballast valve open, leading to out-standing performance and flexibiiity, ifnecessary with highly condensable va-pours. It allows optimal evaporation ofknown high-boiling solvents (e. g. DMF)with shorter process times at lower tem-peratures. The NT pumps are amazinglyquiet and have low vibration character-istics due to the patented flying-drivemotor system. At the same time, servicinghas been greatly simplified owing to thespecial cylinder head design consisting ofseparately removable valve islands for in-dependent diaphragm and valve replace-ment. The fixed-speed NT chemistrypumping units (500 and 600 series) withtheir integral electronic vacuum control in-corporate the benefits of traditional 2-pointcontrol, regulating the vacuum via an

opening and closing solenoid valve. The PC 500 and 600 series are also availablewith dual vacuum connections to allowsimultaneous operation of two indepen-dent vacuum processes, thus savingmoney, energy and space. Each vacuumoutlet has an integral non-return valve thatis designed to prevent cross contaminationand backflow of gases and reduce the risk

Fitted with variable-speedmotors

The NT-Vario 3000 series of pumps andpumping units is fitted with variable-speedmotors that automaticaily adjust thepumping performance according to de-mand.The main advantages are:. Lower energy consumptiono Whisper-quiet and vibration-free oper-

evaporation always occurs under optimalconditions, thus typically reducing the pro-cess time by up to 30 %, corresponding to a30 7o increase in productivity. Al1 in all, theVario system is a logical choice wheneverefficiency improvements, lower labour andenergy costs and streamlined processingtimes are number one priorities. This automatic function particularly comesinto its own with rotary evaporation andparallel evaporation processes. Special, unique control algorithms reduce the riskof foaming or boiling delay, even with com-plex solvent mixtures. The controller iseasy and intuitive to use and provides achoice between standard automatic func-tions or (if appropriate) individual controlparameters.ation

Above all, this controltechnology with its auto-mated vacuum regu-lation has a remarkableinfluence on the efficiency of the vacuum pro-cess. The complexsamples to be dried (e.9.

programs allow fully automatic procedur-es at considerably lower cost. The actuai in-fluence of automated vacuum regulationon process efficiency largely depends onthe vacuum regulation quality and thelevel of automation. Both the manual and the traditional 2-pointvacuum regulation methods are suscep-tible to problems with under- and over-shooting of the vacuum, ieading to foam-ing and boiling over the solvent mixture. Inreality, only a few vacuum regulators workfully automatically. Many systems are noteven able to recognise boiling pressure lev-els independently.

Vario pumps combined withCVC 3000 controllers

The Vario pumps in combination with theCVC 3000 vacuum controller are extraordi-nary in this respect in that they allow fullyautomatic control of the evaporative pro-cess with precise, single-point vacuum con-trol (without hysteresis). As a result, the

ventilation with different media. In addition to the standard control options, the CVC 3000 controller also supports up toten freely definable programs for custom-ised and individual programming combin-ing all the available functions if required. The user can change any of the set para-meters at the touch of a button. The CVC3000 is also self-configuring and automati-cally recognises all externally connectedVacuu Bus components, such as valves, sensors, I/O modules or NT Vario pumps.Communication is controlled by means ofthe Vacuu.Bus protocol.
