Diameter RollerScreensIn iron ore pelletizing plantsroller screens are used toeliminated undersize andoversize pellets. In the process,it is very important that theplants furnish a final pelletproduct with a precise diametertolerance. The space between

the rollers used for screening is adjusted for the pellet diameter whichare to be rejected. More rollers on these screens improve screeningeffeciency.

The development by Metal 7 of an abrasive resistant coating for theserollers has had a major improvement in roller screens in the pasttwenty years. Prior to these coatings the operators have been usinglarger diameter rollers to allow for progressive wear. Therefore, theapplication of this coating has allowed a use of smaller diameterrollers which improves screening effeciency in the same screen area.

Fifteen (15) years ago, the Iron Ore Company of Canada has used101.6mm (4") diameter rollers on their green pellet screen. The Metal7 ceramic coated rollers have permitted to reduce the roller diameterto 76.2mm (3" Diameter) since the 1980’s. During the mid 1990’s asecond improvement was initiated by the use of 63mm (2.5")diameter rollers.

At the Iron Ore Company of Canada, 72 rollers are used in the screendeck compared to the original 48. The increase in the productioncapacity and screening area has been improved by over fifty percent(50%). Also, the screen deck surface with smaller diameter rollersprovides a more uniform flow with minimum loss (damaged) of greenpellets in this screening process.
