In 1864 he joined John Pierce Lacy to formAsh & Lacy. At the start of the new millennium Ash &Lacy were taken over by Hill & Smith Holdings Plc,now the Parent Company.
JA Envirotanks is a trading name within Joseph AshLtd specialising in the mass production ofaboveground enclosed bunded steel tanks and burieddouble skinned steel tanks. The company hasoccupied its current site for over 150 years, alwaysspecialising in tank production with high capacitycranes and specialist welding equipment technology.
More bespoke tanks and fabrications are produced onsite from carbon steels and stainless steels whichinclude conical hoppers, chemical and process tankswith specialised linings and ladders, platforms, stairways and frames. All steelwork is galvanised bythe sister company Joseph Ash Galvanising. JosephAsh is also one of the largest galvanising operations inEurope which includes many galvanising plants withinthe UK.
The patented “ENVIROTANK” product range ismanufactured in Birmingham which includes enclosedbunded rectangular and cylindrical tanks which complywith The Control of Pollution Regulations and arelicensed to OFTEC standard OFS T200.
JA Envirotanks products are suitable for all fuelsincluding specially engineered tanks for the storage ofthe latest formulated bio fuels with heaters andspecialist coatings.
JA Envirotanks produce tanks with a designed life of20 years to meet the needs of aggressive commercialand industrial environments.
Located at the hub of the UK motorway network JAEnvirotanks can despatch, deliver and offload at anymainland location or port.

A unique design (“Pat App 2 477 266”) comprising a primary storagetank without internal structure to enable ease of internal inspection andcleaning. The base of the tank has a sloping hopper style bottom to asump, the sump being serviced by a 25mm sludge drain pipeaccessible from the tank top.
The concept with correctly positioned manway inspection pointsallows tank cleaning without man entry reducing the need for confinedspace entry health and safety procedures.
The primary tank is enclosed by an outer steel bund that fully complieswith the control of pollution regulations, the bund holding the innertank capacity plus 10% (110% containment).
The tank can be split into compartments for gas oil/diesel/oils/Adbluand process liquids. Internal tank linings can easily be applied due tothe unrestrictive internal tank construction.
External manways and connections are enclosed within a steel securehatch which is padlockable to prevent tampering.
End or side mounted security cabinets can be fitted including steel orroller shutter doors and integral spillage trays, to house pipework, pumps, gauging, alarms and controls.
Designed life 20 years.
Inner tank and outer bund pressure tested.
Design for the FutureWith developing Bio-fuels water contentand bacterial growth is becoming more ofan issue in tanks; regular tank cleaning andinspections are now necessary.
Entering tanks presents health and safetyconcerns and by constructing a tank withfree internal space (no cross stays) makesentry and egress easier and safer. Accessand retrieval of remotely controlled cleaningtechnologies (non man entry systems) isalso more practical with Bio-Envirotanks.
The incorporation of sloping bases andsumps helps reduce the frequency ofcleaning as water and contaminants willeasily drain into the sump. Residues areextracted via the sludge drain pipe whichruns from the tank top to the sump.

The most cost effective and environmentally safe way of storing anddispensing gas, oil, diesel and kerosene. Ideal for fuelling plant atbuilding sites and smaller transport operations.
The Gravity Envirotank can also be coupled into small standbygenerator and boiler installations.
The Envirotanks compact design allows it to take up the minimum ofspace. Being a totally self contained, ready-to-use sealed unit, makesit easily movable when empty and gives low maintenance as norainwater can enter the bunded area.
The bund is designed to contain 110% of the primary tank volume.Manufactured generally to BS 799 Part 5 Type J 2010. From Steelplate to BS EN 10 025: 2004: S275
Compliance with the control of pollution regulations.

Time consuming site construction work for the installation of tanksto store diesel fuel, white spirit and other semi-hazardous liquids isno longer a problem.
A tank within a tank or ‘Bunded Tank’ by the Birminghamspecialists, J A Envirotanks needs only a suitable hard standing. Ithas the very useful additional advantage of being portable from siteto site.
This tank is available in a range of sizes from 1,000 litres up to100,000 litres. The outer ‘Bund’ tank normally has a capacity of110% compared with the inner tank to ensure any leakage is safelycontained.
The complete package comprises the storage tank, fitted inside its‘Bund’ tank, all ancillary pipework, valves, contents gauge, caps andlifting lugs. A dispensing pump and fuel monitoring equipmentcan also be fitted, if required, with all pipework connectedand wired to the isolating switch. After connection to amains supply the package is ready for use.
Fabricated from mild steel plate the tanks areprotected by a zinc phosphate alkyd primerand a coat of gloss finish paint forweatherproofing.
J A Envirotanks deliver the completepackage as a unit to the customer’spremises. If, at a later date, a new site forthe ‘Bunded tank’ is required it only has tobe emptied of liquid, lifted onto a truckand transported to its new location.
Bund designed to contain 110% of theinner tank volume. Manufactured to BS799Part 5 2010 from steel plate to BS EN 10025: 2004: S275. Compliance with thecontrol of pollution regulations.

Cradle Form for Tanks 2,591 to 2,743 diameter
BS799: Part 5: 2010Min. Height = 150mm
Cradle positions
• Steel cradles are used to support horizontalcylindrical storage tanks (single skinned, enclosedbunded and double skinned)
• It is normal practise to weld the cradle to the tank
• A 1:50 slope is recommended for oil tanks
• A 1:30 slope is required for aviation fuel tanks
• Finish to match the tank.
