1.1 – Cleaning and Disinfection
1.1.1 – DefinitionThe purpose of the operation is to clean and disinfect
whatever soft or hard surfaces (fabrics, dishes, floors, tiles,
pipes tanks…). On one hand, Cleaning eliminates soils
present upon surfaces while avoiding deposit formation
and corrosion of the equipments. On the other hand,
Disinfection reduces the amount of micro-organisms to a
level compatible with the Industrial & Institutional
operations. The targets for disinfecting processes are
typically:
5 log reductions for the bacteria,
4 log reductions for the yeasts,
3 log reductions for the bacterial spores.
The cleaning and disinfecting process are driven by four
elements: temperature, time, mechanical force and
physicochemistry.
Nowadays, cleaning process is more and more driven by
Ecosavings (energy and water consumption reduction).
Green wave is in the air and focus is placed on maximum
CO2 savings during the process. Accordingly, low energy
cleaning is favored and the physico-chemistry contribution
needs to be increased in order to compensate for the
lower temperature, shorter contact time and reduced
mechanical strength. DEQUEST® products are powerful
ingredients to boost cleaner efficacy and close the gap
arising from these stressed cleaning conditions.
1.1.2 – Formulations Ingredients Key Requirements.Formulations ingredients are selected to deliver at the
end of the cleaning process the expected key requirements:
• High cleaning performances: efficient removal of soils
and fats, microbiological control, easy rinse…
• Formulation compatibility: solubility, stability and non
interference with other components
• Improved operations: foam regulation, control of
corrosion, short contact time …
• Cost competitive raw materials: high efficiency at low
dosage
• Safe handling and easy application: automated feeding
equipment, minimization of the number of steps…

1 Introduction: Cleaning & disinfection in Industrial and Institutional applications
The Italmatch Chemicals S.p.A. DEQUEST® business
offers a unique set of ingredients for I&I products.
DEQUEST® range includes phosphonates and inulin
derivatives.
More than 40 years ago, DEQUEST® pioneered the
development of phosphonate based antiscalants.
DEQUEST® phosphonates have been the product of
choice for scale prevention, dispersion, bleach
stabilization, chelation and metal corrosion inhibition
in various applications for many years. Recently,
carboxymethyl inulin has been added to the
DEQUEST® line up in order to offer a biodegradable
scale inhibitor/dispersant derived from natural
source (chicory root).
DEQUEST® phosphonates are highly stable organic
chelating and scale control agents which form stable
soluble complexes with metal ions. They prevent
water hardness ions (Ca++ and Mg++) and other
trace metal ions from hindering the efficacy of
cleaning agents. On top of their protecting role,
phosphonates participate to the cleaning process by
loosening and dispersing the dirt. Of special interest
is the capability of phosphonates to prevent scale
deposit while formulated at low level. This ability to
control scale formation at sub-stoichiometric level is
known as threshold scale inhibition.
Unlike aminocarboxylate and polycarboxylate chelants,
selected phosphonates have the ability to protect
bleach from decomposition by trace metal ions.

1.1.3 – Functional properties of DEQUEST® products in I&I applicationsItalmatch Chemicals S.p.A. DEQUEST® Phosphonates,
DEQUEST® PB and DEQUEST® FS products are offering a
broad range of functional performances which make them
perfectly suited for Industrial and Institutional cleaning
formulations.
DEQUEST® phosphonates improve the effectiveness of
cleaning agents in a number of different applications,
particularly diary, brewery and food processing equipment
cleaning. In addition, DEQUEST® Phosphonates play an
important role in anti-corrosion and anti-scaling
formulations.
They are also very stable thermally and hydrolytically,
which make them effective under conditions where other
chelating agents are no longer adequate.
carboxymethyl inulin (CMI) based DEQUEST® PB products
are effective calcium chelants and dispersants perfectly
suited for formulations with small environmental impact.
The excellent calcium tolerance of Carboxymethyl Inulin
makes DEQUEST® PB well suited for cleaning operations
where the absence of spotting is an essential feature.
DEQUEST® FS products are a range of specialty
phosphonates designed for I&I application.

3.2 – Institutional dish washingDetergent for institutional dishwashing can be formulated
either as powder or as liquid (the latter being preferred for
automatic dosing). In the case of liquid formulation the
detergent can be split in different products (i.e. detergent,
alkalinity booster, bleach, rinse aid).
DEQUEST® products are used in the dishwashing products
to act as co-builder (DEQUEST® 2016, DEQUEST® FS 0520,
DEQUEST® PB 11625), stabilize bleach system (DEQUEST®
FS 0531, DEQUEST® FS 0536, DEQUEST® FS 0539) and
enhanced stain removal.
During the dishwashing process, the DEQUEST® FS grades
help removing soil from the dishes and prevent from the
redeposition of the soil particules (Figure 3 & 4). During
the rinsing and drying step, DEQUEST® products prevent
spotting and filming in order to get a shiny spotless dish.
Figure 5 illustrates the ability of the DEQUEST® FS 500

3.6 – Vehicle washVehicle washes rely on either low foam (high pressure or
touchless) or high foam (low pressure) cleaning. After a
pre-soak, vehicles enter cleaning arches wherein the
detergent is sprayed and the vehicle cleaned with the
help of high pressure jet or brush. Finally, vehicles are
rinsed off. Rinse aids are dosed in the last rinse to avoid
water spotting and provide finish if required.
The vehicle wash industry relies heavily on NTA as
sequestrant. However, increasing concern about the safety
of NTA and its classification as carcinogenic or potential
carcinogenic chemicals in the US and EU respectively call
for its replacement in vehicle wash formulations.
The new DEQUEST® FS line has been especially designed to
provide improvement of the detergency power thanks to
their very good behaviour in terms of sequestration,
dispersion and traffic film removal. Additionally, during rinse
steps, the use of DEQUEST® FS in the formulation, gives the
assurance of a total elimination of the hardness spotting
either by carry-over or when dosed directly in the rinse. The
efficiency of water spot removal of DEQUEST® FS is illustrated
in Figure 7.

DEQUEST® FS 0520 will also ensure very good performance in
wheel rims cleaning. DEQUEST® FS 0520 is especially
designed to fit with the high alkalinity of the cleaning detergent
used at this stage and will remove very efficiently the
particulate greasy deposit present on the wheel rims. Figure 8
illustrates the superior performance of DEQUEST® FS grades in
particulate greasy soil.
3.5.2 – Acidic disinfectantsAcidic disinfectants are usually based on organic acids
and surfactants. In such cases, DEQUEST® 2010 is best
suited as sequestrant for such formulation.
3.5.3 – Neutral disinfectantsNeutral disinfectants are formulated for instance with
isothiazolinones, bronopol, aldehydes, guanidines, QAC
and sequestrant.
The presence of chelant in neutral solutions containing
biocides like aldehydes, ketones, surfactants, … is well-
known to significantly improve the biocidal properties of
the blend due to a synergetic effect based on the
destabilization of the cells. DEQUEST® 2066,
DEQUEST® 2046 and DEQUEST® 2016 are effective
chelants in neutral disinfectant and advantageously
replace EDTA.
3.5.4 – Oxidising disinfectantsOxidizing disinfectants are based on oxidising agents such
as peracetic acid, HOCl or iodine. Of special interest is the
ability of DEQUEST® to stabilize peroxide. Since these
peroxide are formulated at acidic pH to avoid
decomposition, DEQUEST® 2010 and DEQUEST® 2010LC
(its low chloride grade) are most suitable to bind transition
metals and avoid bleach decomposition (Figure 6).

DEQUEST® products provide scale control, metal
sequestration, dispersion to cleaning solutions used in
process equipment cleaners. The cleaning efficacy is
improved by the presence of DEQUEST® phosphonate,
especially on greasy soil. When acidic formulations are
used, they also prevent corrosion inhibition. Finally,
chosen DEQUEST® are compatible with chlor-alkaline
formulation and are suitable for bleach stabilisation.
Alkaline formulations benefit from DEQUEST® FS 0536
while DEQUEST® FS 0520 are suitable cleaners containing
high concentration of caustic. DEQUEST® 2000 and
DEQUEST® 2010 are the phosphonates of choice for acidic
formulations. DEQUEST® FS 0539 is compatible with chlor-
alkaline formulation while oxygen bleach containing
cleaners benefit from DEQUEST® FS 0536 that provides
bleach stabilization.
3.5 – DisinfectantsDisinfectants can be sorted in 4 classes:
• Alkaline disinfectants
• Acid disinfectants
• Neutral disinfectants
• Oxidizing disinfectants
3.5.1 – Alkaline disinfectantsAlkaline disinfectants typically contain: NaOH/KOH,
NaOCl.NaCl as booster, surfactant and sequestrant.
DEQUEST® 2066 and DEQUEST® 2046 are effective
sequestrants and are suitable EDTA substitutes. Based on
the strength of the phosphonate-calcium complex,
disinfectant bath formulated with these phosphonates
should have the same disinfecting efficiency as equivalent
formulation with EDTA.
DEQUEST® FS 0539 is compatible with hypochlorite while
DEQUEST® 7000 stabilizes hypochlorite and enhances the
disinfection.
3.3 – Industrial bottle washingThe industrial bottle washing process is divided in four
steps
• Pre-soak: 30-55° C
• Cleaning and sanitization: 70-95° C, 1.5-2%w NaOH
• Rinse:
• Warm rinse: 60° C
• Cold rinse: 25° C
DEQUEST® products provide a wide range of functionalities
in the different parts of the washing process. They prevent
scale formation, help the soil removal, keep dirt in
suspension, inhibit spotting and reduce scuffing.
The scuffing is taking the form of white scratches of
varying widths and depths, mainly just under the shoulder
and above the insweep of the bottle. It is caused by a
mixture of chemical and mechanical attack on the glass
and can be significantly reduced (up to 10-folds) by the
use of carefully chosen DEQUEST® products.

3.7.2 – Metal protectionDEQUEST® 2010 after cleaning provides corrosion
protection against atmospheric attack during storage and
transit, prior further finishing steps. It can also be applied
as a passivization rinse to provide corrosion protection to
automotive lubricating oil systems.
DEQUEST® 2000 and DEQUEST® 2060 at 0.5-5%w in
phosphoric or sulfuric acid afford 90-99% corrosion
inhibition of aluminium during acid treatment.
3.7.3 – Metal plating and finishingThe elimination or sequestration of trace metal impurities
that can impair metal deposition is critical in metal plating
and finishing process.
In conventional electroplating baths, DEQUEST®
phosphonates can replace cyanides as primary
electrolytes. DEQUEST® 2010 complexes trace metal
plating baths which can impair metal deposition. It can be
effective at 0.1-1% concentration in copper, nickel, silver,
gold and other plating solutions.
Addition of DEQUEST® 2010 or DEQUEST® 2000 in
combination with gluconate to aluminum etching baths
inhibit the formation of aluminum oxide/hydroxide.
