A year well done
K1 has now completed our second year. Consistently we achieve good results in research
and education. Big thanks to all K1 employees and close collaborators!
At K1 we have a shared mission in education in medicine, health and nutrition. Likewise, we have a
common objective in bringing forth new medical knowledge through targeted research. We solve our
tasks as good team players. Research groups and publications showcase cooperation, where eve-
ryone contribute with labor and expertise. The educational programs are combined by a number of
elements where each teacher performs his/her part. The administration organizes and facilitates, as
the oil in the machinery and glue of the organization. The technicians are essential in developing
methods and doing practical implementation. Few workplaces are so dependent on commitment
and determination of so many implicated parties. In some contexts, individuals and individual groups
that have had particular success, are highlighted. We give awards, allocate competitive funds, and
rank with points, citations and student evaluation. Nevertheless, for an overall result all are equally
important. What doctors and nutritionists get out of their education is the sum of what we all have
contributed with. Research depends on quality data from many sources, broad processing, and an
ability to communicate discoveries, but is also a result of financial and administrative framework and
ability to finance. We are all responsible or can take credit and blame for all that is achieved at K1.
The new medicine study plan is making continuously
progress. Detailed planning for each semester is just
around the corner; be active in providing input to the se-
mester boards. Elective courses are under preparation.
Here it is important to sign up for the competition. K1's
educational communities often win awards as the best.
That is great!
Research results are reported in every K1-nytt. Lately,
we have had breakthroughs in many applications for
funding both by the NRC and the EU, and also internally
by Helse Vest and the faculty.
It has been a pleasant and prosperous 2014 for K1, with
many ups. Thank you for the contributions of each and
every one!

Get to know K1’s research groups: The Mitochondrial Medicine and Neurogenetics (MMN) Group
The group is a clinical and research unit devoted to the diagnosis, study and treatment of inherited neurological diseases with special focus on mitochondrial disease.
The major research areas within the MMN group are mitochondrial disease and movement disorders, in-cluding parkinsonism, dystonia and ataxia. We conduct multidisciplinary, translational research that inclu-de clinical and laboratory studies, as well as studies of animal models. The goal is to promote better diagnosis and treatment of inherited neurological diseases by conducting state of the art research that will elucidate disease mechanisms and define new treatments. Leader of the group is Professor Laurence A. Bin-doff. Read more about the group here.
NRC-funding, Unge forskertalenter
We congratulate Haris Tzoulis and Kristoffer Haugarvoll with NRC funding in the category Young researcher talents!
Charalampos (Haris) Tzoulis with the project ”Mitochondrial dysfunction in the pathogenesis of Parkinsons disease: elucidating disease mecha-nisms and identifying therapeutic targets”.
Kristoffer Haugarvoll with the project ”Resolving complex genetic causes of Movement Disorders”.
The amount is about 7 mill. NOK each for three years and will cover both operations and posi-
tions. That’s a total of 14 million for Bergen research against neurodegeneration! The projects have international partners who are world lead-ing in this field.
NRC-funding, Forskerprosjekt
We congratulate Anders Molven with NRC fun-ding in the category Researcher projects!
Title of the project is "A life without SCHAD: Novel implications for insulin-body weight interplay." Tilde-lingens sum gjenstår å se.
The project is in part a result of the research stay Anders had in Boston 2012/13.
Do you wonder how UiB did compared to UiO and NTNU? Then check out this statistics.

Norwegian health researchers must
submit more EU-proposals
Norwegian health researchers applied far less than their Swedish and Danish colleagues for research funding in the EU's seventh framework
program.
The Research Council finds that the ambition level of Norwegian health researchers is too low and wants to mobilize more to apply for funding in Hori-zon 2020. -We see that it is not a matter of bad quality, but that there is a lack of interest and motivation among the Norwegian communities, says Jesper W. Si-monsen, Division Director at the Research Coun-cil. Read more here (Norw.).

Change in teaching accounts routine
As part of the department’s teaching accounts, each scientific employee registered their own teaching, supervision and censorship in a sepa-rate online system. From autumn 2014 it is deci-
ded to no longer use this system.
The reasons include the technical challenges of the system and that it is difficult to ensure adequate data quality. Instead the faculty will try to use data from the joint student system (FS) as a basis for teaching accounts. This will primarily be data that is registe-
red in FS ahead of each semester and in connection with censorship.

New routine for candidate number
From 1 January 2015 the University of Bergen changes the arrangement for candidate numbes for exams. This means that students' student numbers will no longer be used as candidate
number.
Instead, candidates get a unique candidate number for each exam. With this change , UiB will have the same practices as other universities and colleges in Norway.
See information letter about this (Norw.).
Group leader training
UiB's group training for the spring semester. Training is placed in week 2 (6.-8. January) so it
is unfortunately short notice.
UiB organizes eash semester an educational course for group leaders (colloquium leaders, semi-nar leaders) who will be working with teaching as-signments during the semester.
This course provides an opportunity to discuss and plan your own teaching, and therefore it is bene-ficial if several group leaders from the same sub-jects participate simultaneously so they can colla-borate on preparations.
Registration until the start.
