Part I: Defining Performance

Explain – how to turn a covert performance into an overt

performance.

What we will cover:

Explain– why we define performance when writing an

objective.

Differentiate– (by selecting) between visible performance

(overt) and invisible performance (covert).

By the end of this lesson you will be able to:

What is a Performance?

Performance describes what the

learner is expected to DO.

Think...

what will my learner be doing when

performing the way that I want them

to?

Performance is

something you

can see or hear.

It helps us know

how and when

our students

have mastered

the objective.

What do you mean when you say “you

want learners to know” something?

You must describe what “knowing” means.

You may be thinking…

I can see someone solve a problem

or

Distinguish between two or more things!

You’re right… but in order for those to be

objectives that anyone can understand,

you must describe what they would be

doing in those scenarios.

For instance…

To observe someone solve a problem, they may:

• Calculate the total

For instance…

To observe someone distinguish something, they may:

• Circle

• Point out

• Underline

These are called COVERT because you

cannot see the behavior being

described.

When you come across these types of

performances all you have to do is add

an indicator of performance.

Examples of indicators of performance:

CIRCLE, UNDERLINE, SORT, etc.
