The Gibeonites tricked Joshua and Israel into making a covenant with them, and it provides some powerfully important lessons for us today. First, we must remember that there are deceivers out to deceive us; second, that we are most easily deceived when we fail to seek God’s counsel and finally that we must keep our promises even if they are based on deceit.

Transcript of Deceived!

Deceived!Joshua 9, CB OT p. 342

“The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”Genesis 3.13, CB OT p. 4

“They on their part acted with cunning” (4)

“We have come from a distant country, so make a covenant with us” (6)

“Perhaps you live among us; then how can we make a covenant with you?” (7)

“We are your servants.” (8)

“Who are you? And where do you come from?” (8)

“From a very distant country your servants have come, because of the name of Jehovah your God.” (9)

“We are your servants. Come now, make a covenant with us.” (11)

“Here is our bread. It was still warm when we took it from our houses as our food for the journey on the day we set out to come to you, but now, behold, it is dry and crumbly” (12)

“These wineskins were new when we filled them, and behold, they have burst.” (13)

“And these garments and sandals of ours are worn out from the very long journey.” (13)

“So the men took some of their provisions, but did not ask counsel from Jehovah.” (14)

“And Joshua made peace with them and made a covenant with them, to let them live, and the leaders of the congregation swore to them.” (15)

So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servantsof righteousness.” (2 Corinthians 11.13-15; CB NT p. 323)

2 Thessalonians 2:9-11, CB NT p. 362

I must keep my promises, even if they are based on deceit.

“But the people of Israel did not attack them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn to them by Jehovah, the God of Israel.” (18)

If a man vows a vow to Jehovah, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.

(Numbers 30.2; CB OT p. 257)

Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few.

(Ecclesiastes 5.2;CB OT p. 1052)

When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow.

(Matthew 5.37; CB NT p. 8)

There are deceivers out to deceive you.

I am most easily deceived when I fail to seek God’s counsel.

I must keep my promises, even if they are based on deceit.

Will today be the day you decide to
