Competitive Events Overview

2012 – 2013

Online Registration

• After this meeting, we will go to room A109 to help you choose a competition and register

• You must:o go to

http://www.deca.org/competitions/highschool/ to find out more about each competition

o go to voting on the school website to register

o deadline: November 20 (next Tuesday)

Requirements

• Competitions will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis

• To compete, you must be a registered member

• You must have 3 AMCs to compete by the time of competition

• You must complete 3 practice tests

Levels of Competition

• Regional – Suffolk County Competitionso January 9th at Suffolk Community College

• State – New York State Competitionso March 6th – 8th in Rochester, NY

• National – International Competitionso April 24th – April 28th in Anaheim, CA

State-Only Events

• The following competitions advance from Regionals to States, but not to Nationals

Presentation Events: States Only

• Job Interviewo Task: Create a resume and interview for a

Sales Mid-Management Trainee at Sears

• Sales Demonstrationo Task: To sell a product of your choice to a

panel of judges

• Wholesale Sellingo Task: Represent a manufacturer

while selling a product to a retail outlet

• Public Speaking: Prepared o Task: Prepare a 5-minute speech on a

prepared topic Topic:

• Public Speaking: Extemporaneouso Task: Write a speech at the competition.

Topic is Describe one situation where you have taken a skill you have learned from DECA and applied it to real life. How has DECA changed your approach to personal and professional problems.

Decision Making Events:

• Marketing & Human Resources o Task: Solve a problem given to you by a

judgeo You will have 10 minutes to prepare a

solution and 5 minutes to present it

• Public Service Broadcast Advertising: TVo Task: Create a 30-second advertisement

to present to judges on Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

o Excellent for students that are strong in computer-design

second radio commercial for a given company

• Visual Advertising: Billboard

• Public Service Visual Advertising: Billboardo Task: Design and draw a billboard

Nationals Events

• Qualifying individuals have the opportunity to advance from States to Nationals with the following events

• Five Main Types of Events:o Principles of Business Eventso Individual Series Eventso Team Decision Making Eventso Administration Eventso Professional Selling Eventso Manuals

Principles Series Events

• For first year DECA members

• 100 Question/1 Hour Test (Regionals, States, Nationals) and a Role Play (States, Nationals)

• All events take the “Business Administration Core Exam”
