Collage--An artistic composition of materials and objects pasted over a surface, often with unifying lines and color.

Origin of Collage

• can be traced back hundreds of years

• technique made a dramatic reappearance in the early 20th century as an art form of novelty.

• term collage derives from the French "coller" meaning "glue“

• in the beginning of the 20th century term was coined by both Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso when collage became a distinctive part of Modern art

Surrealism

• a style in which fantastical visual imagery from the subconscious mind is used with no intention of making the work logically comprehensible.

• Founded by Andre Breton in 1924, it was a primarily European movement that attracted many members of the chaotic Dada movement.

• deeply influenced by the psychoanalytic work of Freud and Jung.

Surrealistic CollageThis week’s objective:

• Thumb through magazines in search of images to use for a “Surrealistic” collage.

• Cut the images from photographs you find in the magazines and begin to place them in a new arrangement.

• Glue the images onto the paper provided• Images must cover the entire picture plane• Picture plane should be within ½“ of the edge of the

paper.• Your collage is due by the end of class on Friday,

side-by-side. In art this usually is done with the intention of bringing out a specific quality or creating an effect, particularly when two contrasting or opposing elements are used.

Good craftsmanship is essential for the completion of a “high quality” collage.

Discuss with your tablemates what methods will insure a “high quality” collage. Be prepared to share your criteria with the class.
