PROPOSED FIELD / EDGE MIX
This project introduces two additional programs to the school in order to strive for comprehensive, hands on educational tools; the city market and the urban farm are introduced as agents that engage students, par-ents, and the community to help refocus educational practices. Being fi scally integral and functionally co-de-pendent, the additional programs are spatially distinct from one another. The incorporation of farm and market addresses issues pertaining to child nutrition and com-munal food interests, through which the participants in the school can help to disseminate into the adjacent neighborhoods by stewarding the land themselves and working in the market.
From the politics of the public plaza to the commerce in the market, the school environment offers opportunities for direct interaction with social and economic con-cepts, principles, and a strategy provided in academia and allows the children of the school direct access to democratic production, economics, and maintenance.
This proposal seeks to capitalize on the confl uence of city, agriculture and school and Benefi ting from the density of the city, the ecological and environment, the project engenders a culture of sustainable urban living through education, production, and stewardship of the farm and city alike.
The market is sited adjacent to Live/ Work artist lofts connected by a plaza. Imagining that occasionally mar-ket would fl ow out into the plaza, the plaza is located in relation to the the Live/ Work lofts with tucked under the farm with access via 21st street.
