The story began on 17 December 1952 in a goldmine. There was a big explosion. The miners were
trapped behind rocks underground.
Richard started digging. Then lamps went out, but he did not stop. At last fresh air came through a
crack. Richard and three other men crawled out.
The rescue party arrived and helped pull them out of the mine. They went back and saved the other
trapped men. Richard got a medal for his bravery.
