Product DescriptionUntil Datacom’s WANswitch™, there has been no means ofcost effective resource sharing to monitor all the networklinks of a Wide Area Network. The WANswitch™ fromDatacom Systems, Inc. is the key that unlocks network vis-ibility between links of a Wide Area Network environment.The WANswitch™ provides a connection that allows accessto meet whatever monitoring or analysis requirements yournetworks may have.
Like many network managers, you have an urgent need toprovide easy connectivity between an Analyzer and anarray of attached Wide Area Networks. The DatacomWANswitch™ is capable of providing connectivity for V.35,RS232, RS422, RS423, RS530, X.21, V.10, and V.11 WideArea Networks.
The WANswitch™ is capable of moving Wide AreaNetwork protocol analyzers transparently from one net-work link to another under computer control. TheW2358DSL is designed to permit sharing two WAN proto-col analyzers between 8 network links or up to 32 networklinks by daisy-chaining four WANswitches™.

Connection Instructions (LM 2000 NIC)The typical installation described herein will be for aWANswitch™ with the Pentium II Sniffer Technologies singleport WAN RS/V (LM 2000 NIC) Analyzer running Sniffer®
Distributed Analysis Software.
Installation for a single W2358DSL is shown in Figure 1using DRL311-2-4 V.35 Y-Cables to connect to the WideArea Networks. Installation for a single W2358DSL isshown in Figure 2 using a Model M3415A WANlink™ Panelto connect to the Wide Area Networks. Make the W2358DSLinterconnection between a DSS Analyzer and individual net-work links as follows:
Step 1: Connect the MONITOR port of one of the DSSAnalyzers to the Common A port of the WANswitch™ using aDRL312-3 Common Cable.
Step 2: Connect the MONITOR port of the other DSSAnalyzer to the Common B port of the WANswitch™ using aDRL312-3 Common Cable.
Step 3: Connect the DRL341-3-3 Control Y-cable DB9Male lead labeled “A” to the COM 1 port of one of the DSSAnalyzers.
NOTE: For single DSS Analyzer installations the DB9 Malelead labeled “B” has been factory tie-wrapped into a 2-inchcoil approximately 8-inches from the common connector so itcan be easily stored above, below, or hang innocuouslybehind the DSI switch. To install two Analyzers the DB9Male lead labeled “B” tie-wrap is removed to make theentire lead length available for installation.
Step 4: Connect the DRL341-3-3 Control Y-cable DB9Male lead labeled “B” to the COM 1 port of the other DSSAnalyzer.
Step 5: Connect the DB9 Female lead of the DRL341-3-3Control Y-cable to the Control port of the WANswitch™.
Step 6: Connect network cables to each link port.
Step 7: Connect the Power Supply 5-pin Male DIN connectorinto the POWER port of the WANswitch™ and then plug thePower Supply into the external power source wall receptacle.A green light within the center of the Datacom front panellogo indicates power is on.

NOTE: The DRL459-3-3 Common Cable will also operate inan RS232 environment, but a DRL469 Male to Femaleadapter is required to be used in conjunction with theDRL459-3-3 Common Cable. Upon request, the adapter willbe sent out Next Day Air free of charge after calling andreceiving authorization from Datacom Technical Support.
Step 1: Connect the DRL-459-3-3 Common Cable DB60Male lead to the MONITOR port of the DSS Analyzer.
Step 2: Connect the DRL-459-3-3 Common Cable DB15Female lead labeled “A” to the Common A port of theWANswitch™.
Step 3: Connect the DRL-459-3-3 Common Cable DB15Female lead labeled “B” to the Common B port of theWANswitch™.
Step 3: Connect the DRL341-3-3 Control Y-cable DB9Male lead labeled “A” to the COM 1 port of the DSSAnalyzer.

SSPPEECCSSGeneralThe WANswitch™ provides effortless visibility into a widerange of network types with easy connectivity. Also,Datacom’s line of WANswitches™ allows resource sharingwith one or two analyzers to meet your network analyzingrequirements. Table A1 shows the WANswitch™ capacity,network type, network connectivity, product weight, andshipping weight.
ElectricalNominal Power Requirements: The WANswitch™ has beenprovided with an external power supply requiring 100-240Volts AC at 50-60 Hertz. This supply is provided as a stan-dard, no charge accessory. The DC voltage and current out-put ratings are +5 Volts DC at 4.0 Amperes, +12 Volts at 1.0Amperes, and -12 Volts at 0.6 Amperes. This power supply isprovided with Safety Extra-Low Voltage (SELV) circuitswhich separate hazardous voltages with a grounded systemon the primary input. The power supply has been certified byDentori T-mark, UL, CUL, and TUV and is CE approved.

These connector ports are shielded DB15 Females and areused for connecting to 8 network links. Any link can beswitched to the Common port.
Daisy AThis connector port is a shielded DB15 Female and is cabledto the next switch Common A when the WANswitch™ isdaisy-chained.
Common AThis connector port is a shielded DB15 Male and is cabled tothe MONITOR port of a DSS or previous switch Daisy Aport if daisy-chained. The WANswitch™ connects the select-ed network link port (1-8) to the Common A port.
Daisy BThis connector port is a shielded DB15 Female and is cabledto the next switch Common B when the WANswitch™ isdaisy-chained.
Common BThis connector port is a shielded DB15 Male and is cabled tothe MONITOR port of a second DSS or previous switchDaisy B port if daisy-chained. The WANswitch™ connects theselected network link port (1-8) to Common B port.
ControlThis connector port is a shielded DB9 Female and is cabledto the COM 1 port of both DSS’s or to the previous switchLink port if daisy-chained. If the user prefers, this port maybe used by any compatible PC where Datacom SwitchControl Software resides, or by a modem for remote opera-tion. Because this port has a modified RS232 configuration,Datacom Systems supplied control cabling must be used.
LinkThis connector is a shielded DB9 Male and is cabled to theControl port of the next WANswitch™ when daisy-chained.
PowerThis connector is a 5-pin DIN Female circular connectorused to cable to either the provided 100-240 Volts AC, 50-60Hertz external DC power supply, or the optional 35-72 VoltDC external DC power supply.

Daisy-Chain AddressingIMPORTANTPRIOR to installing any WANswitch™ in a daisy-chain, theaddress of each individual switch must be set one switch at atime to perform the daisy-chain address configuration. Thehardware connection to perform this configuration from astand-alone computer platform is explained next. After thehardware connection has been accomplished, the address ofeach individual switch must be set one at a time with theATTACHit program as described in the DATACOMswitchSOFTWAREguide.
Connection InstructionsThe typical daisy-chain addressing installation describedherein will be for a WANswitch™.
Step 1: Connect the COM1 port of the computer platform tothe Control port of the WANswitch™ using a DRL341-3-3cable as shown Figure C1.
Step 2: Connect the Power Supply 5-pin DIN Male connectorinto the Power port of the WANswitch™ and then plug thePower Supply into the external power source wall receptacle.A green light within the center of the Datacom front panel logoindicates power is on.

The installer will eliminate some connectionsdiscussed if only one DSS Analyzer is present. To makeinterconnection between multiple WANswitches™, twoAnalyzers, and individual network links, follow the stepsbelow:
Step 1: (NOTE: If a WANswitch™ is to be used in a mixedswitch daisy-chain, it must be the first switch.) Install eachswitch in the order that corresponds to it’s respective switchaddress. Connect the MONITOR port of each DSS to theCommon A and Common B ports, respectively, of the firstWANswitch™ using DRL312-3 cables. Then connect the DaisyA and Daisy B ports of the first WANswitch™ to the Common Aand Common B ports, respectively, of the second WANswitch™
using DRL312-3 cables. Any subsequent daisy-chainedWANswitches™ have their Daisy A and Daisy B ports connect-ed to the Common A and Common B ports, respectively, of thenext WANswitch™ using a DRL312-3 cable.
Step 2: Connect the DRL341-3-3 Control Y-cable DB9Male lead labeled “A” to the COM 1 port of one of the DSSAnalyzers.
NOTE: For single DSS Analyzer or daisy-chain installationsthe DB9 Male lead labeled “B” has been factory tie-wrapped into a 2-inch coil approximately 8-inches from thecommon connector so it can be easily stored above, below, orhang innocuously behind the DSI switch. To install twoAnalyzers the DB9 Male lead labeled “B” tie-wrap isremoved to make the entire lead length available for instal-lation.
Step 3: Connect the DRL341-3-3 Control Y-cable DB9Male lead labeled “B” to the COM 1 port of the other DSSAnalyzer.
Step 4: Connect the DB9 Female lead of the DRL341-3-3Control Y-cable to the Control port of the WANswitch™. Anysubsequent daisy-chained WANswitches™ connect theirtheir Link port using a DRL341-3-3 Control Y-cable DB9Male lead labeled “A” connected to the Control port of thenext WANswitch™ with the DB9 Female lead of the DRL341-3-3 Control Y-cable.
Step 5: Connect network cables to the desired Network portsof each WANswitch™.
Step6: Connect the Power Supply 5-pin DIN Male connectorinto the Power port of the WANswitch™ and then plug thePower Supply into the external power source wall receptacle.A green light within the center of the Datacom front panellogo indicates power is on.
After the daisy-chain hardware installation is complete, theswitch control software must be configured or reconfigured.Refer to the DATACOMswitch SOFTWAREguide.

Step 8: Connect network cables to the desired Network portsof each WANswitch™.

Please check the obvious:Ensure that the Power Supply 5-pin DIN Male connector is inserted into position inthe POWER port.Check that the power cord is properly attached.Verify that the external power source wall receptacle has power available. Try plug-ging another device into the outlet to see if it works.
If you have a known good power supply or power cord, try replacing either or both andretest.

PROBLEM TROUBLESHOOTING SUGGESTIONS
Please determine that the switch in question is physically connected to the DSS Analyzer fromwhich control is being attempted. Also, determine that you have the correct SniffMaster®
Console Internet Protocol (IP) address for the DSS Server physically connected to the switch.
For API software only, verify that the segment port has been enabled with the “ ” showingin the left column of the Topology window of the Sniffer Technologies SniffMaster® Consolesoftware.
If a communications time-out has occurred, confirm that the proper Control Cable is in use.A DRL341-3-3 Control Y-cable must be used because the Control port is a modified RS232that will work only with the Datacom-supplied cables. If the proper cable has been used, sub-stitute a known good DRL341-3-3 Control Y-cable.
The DSS Analyzer from which you are trying to control the switch may be defective. If theswitch will control by using another available DSS Analyzer, the original DSS Analyzer isdefective.

Confirm that the Common Cable connects the WAN Common Port of the WANswitch™ to theWAN MONITOR port of the DSS Server.
If you are unable to capture data or access one segment, swap out the cable with a known goodDatacom Systems cable.
Disconnect the patch cable from the suspect switch port. Reconnect it to a switch port thathas been working properly. If the problem exhibited by that segment is the same as thesuspect port, the problem is the cable not the switch.Disconnect a patch cable from a switch port that is functioning properly and reconnect itto the suspect port. If the suspect port still fails, the problem is in the switch. ContactDatacom Systems, Inc. Customer Service.
If the problem occurs consistently on all ports of the switch and the cables have been verifiedand checked, try connecting the hub or MUX directly to the DSS Server monitor card, bypass-ing the switch. If the DSS Server now allows analysis, the problem is in the switch. ContactDatacom Systems, Inc. Customer Service.

In the event of a problem with a switch;• Contact Datacom Customer Service for determination that the
switch requires replacement• DSI will ship a functionally equivalent replacement switch to you
within one business day by prepaid overnight air• Return the failed switch, freight prepaid, with the Datacom
Customer Service RMA number clearly marked on the outside ofthe package, to arrive within ten days at Datacom Systems Inc.,9 Adler Drive, East Syracuse, NY 13057-1290, USA
Customers outside North America, contact DSI regarding timing ofa replacement switch, but shipping, handling, and duty charges toand from the factory will be the customer’s responsibility.
In the event of other than a switch defect, contact DatacomCustomer Service for assistance and Datacom will repair or replacethe defective equipment and send it to you, freight prepaid. If DSIdetermines that the equipment is not defective, it will return it toyou, freight collect.
ALL ITEMS FOR RETURN MUST HAVE A RETURN MATERIALAUTHORIZATION (RMA) NUMBER FROM DATACOM CUSTOMERSERVICE AT (315) 463-9541. ITEMS WITHOUT AN RMA WILL BEREFUSED OR RETURNED FREIGHT COLLECT.
DSI shall have no responsibility for any deficiency resulting fromaccidents, misuse, modifications, power disturbances (e.g., lighten-ing, ESD, use of a power supply not specified by DSI, etc.), or var-ious other forms of disaster, e.g., earthquakes, floods, etc. Ifreturned equipment is found to have failed under any of these cir-cumstances, the customer will be invoiced for repair or replace-ment of that switch or hardware.
Limitation On LiabilityThe warranties set forth above are exclusive and in lieu of all otherwarranties. Datacom Systems, Inc. (DSI) makes no other war-ranties, expressed or implied, and DSI expressly disclaims all otherwarranties, including but not limited to implied warranties of mer-chantability and fitness for a particular purpose. Moreover, the pro-visions set forth above state DSI’s entire responsibility and yoursole and exclusive remedy with respect to any breach of warrantyor contract.
No liability for consequential damages. Under no circumstancesand under no theory of liability shall DSI be liable for costs of pro-curement of substitute products or services, lost profits, lost sav-ings, loss of information or data, or any other special, indirect, con-sequential or incidental damages, arising in any way out of the saleof, use of, or inability to use, any DSI product or service, even ifDSI has been advised of the possibility of such damages.
