To reduce power consumption, e.g.- Use Solid State Drives (SSD) instead of disk- Use computers which require less power

2.2 Consolidation

Doing more with less such as switching to Linux.

Using higher-end hardware to house multiple and disparate workloads onto a single system or cluster of systems.

2.4 Leveraged Cloud Computing

Using service offered by Commercial Cloud Provider which offers 24x7x365 availability, maintenance, support, etc.

Setting up your own cloud computing, tapping on all the equipment at your own datacenter.

Setting up a mirror site with load balancers.

Instead of buying extra bandwidth, you can use the service such as Akamai.

Sample customers of Akamai are MTV, MySpace, Fox Interactive.

Instead of using a lot of storage devices, you should use Storage-Area Networks (SAN) which are- expandable- scalable- inexpensive

3.1.1 Greening of Datacenter

Info-Tech suggested that it is still a good strategy to reduce energy costs.

Years ago, Datacenter had a power density of about 500 watts per square meter but in 2010, it is 20 times or more. 25

1) Flywheel

The use of a few-meter diameter flywheel running with electricity.

When electricity fails, the moment of inertia keeps the flywheel turning

and producing electricity for temporary use.

Flywheel UPS is greener and generate less hea than conventional battery-based UPS.

2) Economizers

Economizers are systems that use cool outside air to drop datacenter temperature rather than using expensive air conditioning.

3) Computer Systems Based on DC Power

Bring AC power from the street to charge up batteries and then deliver the DC from batteries to computer equipment and save 6-12% of energy.

(Some vendors claimed 15-30% saving)

3.2 Microsoft Datacenter for Bing Search Engine

From dcsblog.burtongroup.com on April 21, 2010, Microsoft is looking at Solid State Disk (SSD) for its datacenter for Bing Search Engine.

Microsoft wished to gain two benefits: - Reduce power consumption / node,

e.g. a processor operates at 10 watts

instead of 50 watts.- Smaller form factor, with small power supplies,

more servers could be packed in smaller space.

The Survey was conducted in July 2010.

Responses from 240 readers.

51% of respondents operate 3 or more datacenters.

26% operate at least 10 datacenters.

on 11 January 2010, Symantec released the finding of its 2010 State of Data Center Study.

The Study in 2010 is the third year.

Surveyed 1,780 datacenters managers in 26 countries in November 2009.

6.1 IDS Readies Data Centers on Ships

From “www.datacenterknowledge.com” on 9 August 2010, International Data Security (IDS) announced “Maritime Data Center” at Redwood City, California, with 15 million US$ for 500 racks of servers.

IDS has options to purchase up to six additional ships, each with more than 200,000 square feet of data center space, enough for about 4,000 racks of equipment.

6.2 Microsoft Picks Virginiafor Major Data Center

From “www.datacenterknowledge.com” on 27 August 2010, Microsoft has selected a site near Boydton, Virginia for a major new datacenter project at 499 million US$ 56

The Governor of Virginia, Bob McDonnell, approved 2.1 million US$ grant to assist with the project.

Virginia Tobacco Commission approved 4.8 million US$ for the project.

From “www.datacenterknowledge.com” on 23 August 2010, Purdue University applied the logic “Most people slow down as the weather get hotter”

to its datacenter.58

Purdue developed software that can slow server activities as temperature rises.

The technique allowed Purdue datacenter to continue operating during several cooling outages, throttling down server activities to prevent the room from overheating.

Campbell told police his gun was stolen and used to shoot up the IT equipment.

From “www.datacenterknowledge.com” on 27 August 2010, more than 220 servers were offline in Chesterfield, Virginia, leaving 24 state agencies without full IT support.
