DART – Declining Ageing and Regional Transformation

CONFERENCE - DEMOGRAPHIC CANGE IN EUROPE - SOLUTIONS FOR THE HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES

Centru RegionCentru Region is situated in the

center of Romania, partially overlaping the historic province Transylvania;

Centru Region is formed of 6 counties: Alba , Brasov , Mureş, Covasna, Harghita and Sibiu;

As of 1st of July 2009, the population of the region was 2 524 491 inhabitants.

Ageing and demographic decline in Centru Region

The population number of Centru Region decreased by 11.2% between 1990 and 2009. The decrease was due mostly to negative external migration flow;

According to the evaluation of the National Institute for Statistics, the population number in Centru Region will decrease to just 1.9 million until 2050;

Over the next 40 years, the proportion of the population aged 65 and over, will almost triple, reaching 31.3% of the total population.

Social and medical home care-services for elderly/dependent people

Initiator: Caritas Alba Iulia & Mureș County Council Financing: Private funds / Local budgets / State budget Beneficiaries: more than 3000 old and dependent persons

living in the rural areas of Mures County.

Catholic Archdiocese of Alba IuliaMember of Caritas Confederation România, Caritas

Europe and Caritas InternationalisIn 2004 Caritas Alba Iulia received the statute of

Public utility NGO, from the Romanian Government, for its important results and interventions in the field of social services.

Mureș County CouncilIs the administrative body of Mureș County –

one of the 6 counties composing Centru region

Acts in the field of social services through the General Direction for Social Assistence and Child Protection

Social and medical home-care services for elderly/dependent people

Financing: Annual allocation from the State and Local Budgets Private funds of Caritas Alba Iulia (mostly coming from donations)

Social and medical home-care services for elderly/dependent people

Beneficiaries:

The ageing process, determined an increase in the number of seniors afected by various chronic deaseses, unable to benefit from regular access to primary medical services.

As a response to this problem the target group of the project was composed by:

more than 3000 persons (for the period 2007-2010) old and dependent persons living in the rural areas of Mures County.

Activities:

Social and medical home-care services: Hygiene services, Feeding, Help for getting dressed or undressed, Support for mobility, Communication, Monitoring of health, Kinetotherapy, Physiotherapy, Kinaesthetics

Social and medical services at home for elderly/dependent people

Caritas Alba Iulia recently launched the first Romanian online space dedicated to active seniors - bringing recognition to the seniors that have continued to be active and involved socially and professionally after retirement age.
