Adjectives and AdverbsLet’s get detailed.

What is an adjective? A word that describes or modifies a

noun or a pronoun

(the articles a, an, the are also adjectives)

Types of Adjectives

Proper Created from proper nouns,

capitalized

Examples: • Canadian• American• Texan

Predicate Follows a linking verb to describe the

subject (noun)

Adjective Forms

Positive • Describes without comparing • Ex: The young girl with blonde hair is sitting

on the red, cushioned chair.

Comparative (-er, more, less) • Description that compares two nouns• Ex: Juliet is prettier than Rosaline.

Superlative (-est, most, least)• Description that compares three or more

nouns• Ex: Johnny is by far the best free-thrower in

the league. His game was the most entertaining to watch during the tournament.

verb, adjective, or another adverb

Types of Adverbs

Time When, how often, or how long

something happened

Example• We played basketball yesterday.

Place Where something happened

Example • I fell on my face right here. Then I got up

and walked to a nearby ice cream parlor.

Manner How something happened

Example• Jenny glided smoothly across the dance

floor with her partner.

Degree Tells how much or how little

Example• The flight was entirely booked.

Adverb Forms

Adverb forms are the same as adjective forms: positive, comparative, and superlative.
