Rise in retail, wholesale inflation

dashes rate-cut hopesNEW DELHI, Apr 15:

Expensive fruits and vegeta-bles pushed up wholesale andretail inflation rates in March, dashing industry's hopes of a ratecut by the RBI in its forthcomingmonetary policy review in June.

While wholesale inflation inMarch rose to a three-monthhigh of 5.7 per cent, retail infla-tion inched up to 8.31 per centafter softening for three straightmonths since December.

Although the Reserve Bankof India, which has beenrefraining from cutting ratesbecause of heightened inflation, may wait for some more time,India Inc wants the central bankto take a view in the backdropof the slowing economy.

WPI inflation, which had beendeclining since December, hadeased to a nine-month low of 4.68per cent in February, according togovernment data released today.

Retail inflation, as measuredby the Consumer Price Index(CPI), rose to 8.31 per cent from8.03 in February, driven by risingprices of fruits and vegetables.
