Aaron Connor, a senior from Murphysboro studying exercise science, admires his catch Monday at Kinkaid Lake in Murphysboro. Connor, president of the Saluki Bassers fishing team, said he tries to make it out to the lake at least twice a week. Connor said he could have bought a brand new truck with all the money he has spent on fishing gear in his life. “There’s still nothing I’d rather be doing more than this,” he said.

Joyce Addison, of Carbondale, trims dead leaves and stalks from her garden Wednesday at her home. Addison said the greatest hassle of the dry weather is that she has to drag the hose around more often to keep her plants alive. According to the Paducah National Weather Service there is a fire weather watch in effect from Thursday morning to Thursday evening as well as a heat advisory from 1 p.m. Thursday to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Dawn Taylor, Torrey’s mother and Kite Hill employee, invited Conners to teach a cooking class in the winery’s kitchen. “Chef Bill and I had started a community garden at my children’s school, and I wanted him to come here to teach a class on how to make fresh, healthy meals,” Taylor said. “People have responded to it very positively.”
