What’s behind it?

We tried hard to avoid this ! But we’re not quite a perfect clockwork yet

From start to MVP in 6 months

We launched Property Partner on a production-grade, highly available, monitored environment within 6 months

What we did

Responsive Frontend – HTML5, CSS, Angular

Backend – Scala, Play & Akka

Lightweight Admin

Process & Build Pipeline

Pre-Launch Site & Blog

How we did it

Engineering Approach from the start:

• Strong Tech Team: 2 FE, 2BE + Contract Tester

• Process from day 1• Attention to detail• We used AWS, a lot!• No Ops (almost)

We worked really!!!!! hard

Why AWS?

Cloud Formation - Didn’t need a network engineer

RDS MySQL - No need to install DB, easy to maintain

Elastic Beanstalk - Scalable, fault tolerant environment

S3 - Simple store for images and assets

CloudFront - Serves them all through a CDN

CloudWatch - Monitoring

Our Launch Stack, Dec 2014

• Simple 3 Tier Architecture

• Use as much AWS as

possible

• Require as little Ops as

possible

• It works, and it scales!

What did our engineers do next?

Micro(ish) Services – AWS Elastic Container Service

Ad-hoc functionality– AWS Lambda

NASQL (Not Always SQL)

A CDN to front it all - CloudFront

More control of our API – API Gateway

Conclusion

Keep tech simple at the early stages

You’re likely NOT in the business of setting up

servers and environments

Focus on delivering customer value and growing

your business instead
