Homework• Students will receive math and reading

homework on Monday, and it will be due FRIDAY.

• Encourage students to return work the next day, but I do not check for it until Friday.

• Students make up missing homework during Friday morning recess.

• Students who turn in homework on time are eligible to win fabulous weekly prizes!!

Math• All 3rd grade students take common

math assessments, based on the state GLCEs.

• Some concepts taught:• Multiplication facts through 10 X 10

(challenge through 12 X 12)• Division Graphing• Fractions Money – making change• Decimals Geometry• Algebra

Rocket MathRocket Math is a program to help students master basic math facts for all operations.These facts must become automatic so that students can do higher level problems.•Unlike “Mad Minutes” Rocket Math takes into account students writing and processing speed.•Each student begins at his/her individual level, and proceeds independently.•As they finish a level students progress to the next level or next operation.•Only two facts are introduced per day.•See the parent letter for more details.

Math Series – 3nd YearWe use Macmillan McGraw-Hill “Math Connects”.•Students have a textbook for the first time.•You can access the website from home. •Go to www.macmillanmh.com•Choose Math•Choose 3rd Grade

•You will have access to games, extra practice, glossary of terms, personal tutors, quizzes and tests. •To view the complete textbook, click on Studentworks Plus Online. You will need to enter the following code: B4FD4E3A7E

Reading/Language Arts• Daily 5 – Read to Self, Read to Others, Work

on Writing, Word Work, Listen to Reading • Guided Reading Groups• Comprehension Strategies• RTI – to start after testing is finished• Grammar – includes writing complete

sentences and paragraphs.• Words Their Way Spelling• 6 + 1 Traits of Writing• Cursive

Science/Social Studies• We expose students to concepts – mastery

not expected at this level.• Mr. Hanna teaches Science; I teach Social

Studies.• Focus on Michigan perspective for History,

Geography, Economics, Public Policy Issues.• Start saving souvenirs for Michigan Boxes in

the spring!

• MEAP Tests – Various dates in October• Students tested on 2nd grade GLCEs for

math and reading• SRI Testing – 3 times a year• Students receive a Lexile score that will

help them choose “just right” books.• F & P Testing – 3 times a year• Used to set up flexible reading groups• RTI Testing – Phonics testing in fall,

fluency testing fall and spring
