CMP Project
The focus of the CMP project is to inform my students about John Phillip Sousa and his impact on
American history during his life. I am also going to focus on the effects of different articulations and how
they differ. There will be a 2 day lesson plan. The first day will talk about John Phillip Sousa and the
project/worksheet that will be assigned. The second day will be all about John Phillip Sousa’s piece “The
Thunderer” and all the different articulations used in the piece. The students will be able to perform
each articulation on a scale.
Day 1 Lesson
National Standards:
5. Reading and notating music.
6. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music
8. Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.
9. Understanding music in relation to history and culture.
Materials:
Pencils
Stands
The Thunderer
Instruments
Objectives
1) Students will partake in their daily warm up. The warm up will consist of breathing and
long tones in Concert F.
2) Students will engage in a conversation with the teacher about John Phillip Sousa
3) The class will listen to multiple marches composed by Sousa and discuss them.
Procedures:
1) Good Afternoon class! Please sit with good posture and feet flat on the floor and be
ready to start our warm up
a. Stand up tall and be ready to start breathing
i. Before we start how do you take a proper breath?
ii. Where should our right hand be to make sure we do not lift the
shoulders?
iii. Breathe in for four counts and out for eight.
2) Now grab instruments and I want everyone to take in a deep breath and play Concert F
a. Going up in whole notes play the concert F scale.
i. Now in half notes and then quarter notes
3) Now today we are going to talk about a great American composer
a. His name is John Phillip Sousa
b. He wrote the piece the Thunderer which we are playing for contest.
c. Sousa wrote many marches in his lifetime and got the nickname “The March
King” He wrote many other famous marches such as Stars and Stripes Forever
and Washington Post.
d. He wrote many Marches based on his military background
i. He enlisted in the Marine band in 1868.
ii. He played and conducted in the Marine Band
e. While touring in Europe he developed the sousaphone which is a marching tuba.
The sousaphone wraps around your body and rest on your shoulder so you can
play standing up with no issue.
4) We will be studying his music today so please get out the piece The Thunderer
a. I am going to put on a recording on the piece. I want you think about different
things about the piece to share with the class. Pay close attention.
b. Right away who has the melody? Do we change keys? What measure?
c. Are there any repeated sections?
5) So now that we talked about the piece and John Phillip Sousa, here is a worksheet based
on what we talked about today. Now there are a few questions on there that we did not
cover. I would like you to research them with your parents and or friends to find the
answers. We will discuss more about the piece tomorrow.
Assessment: As a review… Who wrote the piece The Thunderer? What band did he join in
1968? What instrument did he create?
Closing: Next class we will discuss the different articulation styles used in the piece

Instruments
Objectives
1) Students will partake in their daily warm up. The warm up will consist of breathing and
long tones in Concert F.
2) Students will get out the Thunderer and play through it as much as we can
3) Students will have a solid definition of many artiulcaiton styles such as: staccato, tenuto,
accent, slur, and marcato.
3) Now Listen to me play The Concert F scale and tell me what I did different (Slur)
a. What was different? Right I did not rearticulate each note… what is that called?
i. A slur correct! What about this one (Stacatto)
1. What was different? I added separation in between each note
4) On the board here I have written out different symbols and under them are their
corresponding names.
a. Can someone tell me the definition of a slur? Staccato? Accent?
5) Today we are going to learn what a marcato is
a. Marcato is similar to an accent except it has an even shorter presence. It is a
mixture of an accent and a staccato. Now remember accents get full note value
while marcatos get a slightly shorter not value.
6) Now I want you to scan the first page of “The Thunderer” and can you raise your hand
and tell me where you see some of these articulations?
a. The beginning there are many staccatos in your parts.
i. Can everyone play four staccato notes on concert F?
1. Loop it. Now let’s play the Concert F scale in staccato style
7) Where are some others? Slurs in the low voices starting at bar 83.
a. Do you think you can slur a scale? Let’s try it. We will take it slow.
i. Remember to slur a note means you can’t rearticulate notes
8) What about Accents? Clarinets and trumpets have accents in bar 87
a. Accents have emphasis on the notes, but remember it will get full value of the
note.
9) Bar 96 I see the upper woodwinds have some marcato markings
a. How do you play a marcato again?
10) Okay let’s play through the beginning before class is over

Additional Info:
John Phillip Sousa is an American Composer who lived to be 77 years old before we
passed away in 1932. He was born in Washington DC and as a young educator
played the violin. He joined the Marine Band in 1968. He left in 1875 and went on to
work on his works and the creation of the Sousaphone. He eventually went back to
the Marine Band and served as the conductor for 12 years. He continued to work on
music and marches until his death.
The Thunderer- One of the first known American marches written by John Phillip
Sousa. A great piece to display well known concepts that are taught in class and a
great way to spread American history in the music classroom.
