RETAIL
CREATIVE EVENTS: CRUNCH & SQUEEZE
Case Studies
The Brief
Create a brand identity, interior design concept, build and installation of a fresh and modern
smoothie and salad offer, retailing at ExCeL, one of the major exhibition venues in London.
The Solution
We first created the brand identity anchored around the retail offer decided by the client. The
client wanted something fresh, emotive and onomatopoeic. This identity was then developed
into a look and feel for the interior, using fresh shades and large textures creating block
colours. By adding wood veneer, the environment was enriched but kept modern with the
black gloss worktop.
The Result
The signage could be seen from the entrance of ExCeL, attracting customers and driving sales.
Crunch & Squeeze sells premium brands and would now like to expand onto the high street.

LOVE YOUR ART LTD: STORE FIT OUT
The Brief
To completely refurbish a two storey premise in the centre of York for Love Your Art Ltd. The design
came from RIPE Design to transform the old café/wrap outlet into a clean and modern gallery and
retail space for artists to display their work to the general public for purchasing.
The Solution
The premises had to be stripped of its existing partition walls & flooring and the existing staircase
was opened up in order to prepare the space for the new build.
A new glass and stainless steel balustrade was fitted to the staircase. Small partitions were installed
on the ground floor creating intimate spaces with increased wall space for artists work to be hung.
A fired oak solid timber floor was laid throughout and all walls, skirting and ceilings were painted to
a crisp white finish. The shop front fascia and window frames were finished in a matt pale blue and
complimented with stainless steel signage in the Love Your Art branding.
Adjustable contemporary lighting was installed to highlight the artists work. To finish off we built and
installed a reception counter with storage, privacy screen and toughened glass top.
The Result
The end result was a very simple but clean space which allowed flexibility in its use. A subtle
contrast was created between the modern white and stainless steel finishes against the antique
fired oak flooring.
CROMBIE: STORE RE-FITS
Case Studies
The Brief
Develop a series of shop-fit “kits” that can be installed in Crombie stores. The kits must be
functional, whilst building on the style and prestige of the brand. The store in the Bluewater
Shopping Centre required a complete re-design and re-fit.
The Solution
We created a series of stands and display units that could be easily installed within stores. We
installed chrome display units, and a gondolier display. Of particular importance to Crombie was
their Bluewater store which required a full fit-out. We worked with Crombie to redesign the floor
layout to ensure the display pieces worked to their optimum levels, both aesthetically
and functionally.
The Result
We have become a trusted partner for Crombie, carrying ‘holding stock’ to supply and fit future
stores as required. We are currently in discussion with Crombie to perform a full kit-out of their
Newcastle and Glasgow stores, with the possibility of re-fitting their sister store, Jenners.
We have demonstrated that we can innovate within the criteria issued within the brief, this adds
value because it shows that we not only work within the budget, but that we can still be creative
within its constraints. With experienced brand marketers and designers we can offer proven
increases in revenue streams by assessing traffic flows, raising in-store buyer awareness and
driving sales.
MARKS & SPENCER: WESTFIELD STORE OPENING
Case Studies
The Brief
Design, build and install two exhibition display stands for the Westfield London store opening. The stands must not obstruct the shoppers’ line of sight
and clearly showcase M&S visual merchandising. The stands must also engage customers to enter the in-store competition.
The Solution
We installed two display stands into Westfield London; the first was a 360 degree stand with M&S visual merchandising in a very public space in the G9
Atrium of the North Entrance, and the other was within the M&S store.
The public stand was designed to attract and engage customers to enter a competition and direct shoppers to the M&S store, and the second was an
in-store plinth to register and enter into the competition.
The Result
The two exhibition stands were extremely busy on the opening day at Westfield London. The first display stand, situated in the public atrium, attracted a
lot of attention from passing shoppers, who were intrigued to find out what was on offer and how they could enter the competition. The level of interest
from this stand ensured the entry in-store plinth continuously ensured customer participation.
1910 CHILLI REVOLUTION: FOOD RETAIL OUTLET, WESTFIELD
Case Studies
The Brief
Following design solutions provided by Absolute Design, we were asked to fit out a 53m2 food retail
kiosk within the Balcony food court area of Westfield London, Europe’s largest inner-city shopping
destination. We were also asked to fit out a separate 15m2 preparation and wash up room located
on the floor above the food court.
The Solution
We worked closely with Absolute Design, Rosskopf Partners and Westfield London to ensure
that all specifications and guidelines were adhered to. We responded with a full cost breakdown,
engagement schedule and a full schedule of work to be undertaken.
We supplied and fitted all fixtures and fitting according to the Westfield spec including vinyl flooring
throughout, hand made wall tiles from Sweden, full height glass splash backs and glass shrouds to
the grilling areas. We supplied and fitted hot & cold Bain Marie units into the counter tops with glass
display cases. The back of house area was fitted with hygienic cladding to all walls, a metal frame
ceiling was installed with access hatches to the ducting and extraction above. The prep room was
hygienically clad on all walls with stainless steel shelving and dishwashing equipment also fitted.
The Result
We carried out the work in line with the design solution provided by our client Absolute Design and
followed the key specifications set by Westfield London and delivered a unit that is a clean, modern
take on the traditional food kiosk, within a timescale of two months.

THE MALT: INTERIOR DESIGN & REFURBISHMENT
The Brief
Design and create an interior concept to inspire customers to come back to the venue and
increase spend and dwell time, and transform an unloved pub into a sumptuous fine casual dining
experience.
The Solution
We undertook the refurbishment of the entire ground floor and re-designed the interior of the bar,
restaurant, private dining area and entrance. The once cold atmosphere, dreary red and yellow
colour palette and uninspiring design has been replaced by heritage greens, chocolate browns and
deep purples, textured wallpaper, large graphics, Chesterfield sofas, gilded mirrors, rich fabrics
and materials, ornate chandeliers and the piece de resistance a baby grand piano complete with
champagne and wine bucket holders.
We have not only designed and built the interiors to create a rewarding customer experience but the
design also benefits the commercial proposition, which is paramount to its success.
The Result
Following the success of the first phase, we will be undertaking the second phase of the project
later this year and undergoing the refurbishment upstairs to the top floor where the bedrooms will be
designed as boutique suites, which will enable The Malt to offer a unique blend of luxury carried by
great design and craftsmanship delivered with passion.
“The team has created an environment that has a warm and inviting atmosphere, with lots of
ambience and some quirky talking points to bring some life back into the pub and the local area.”
Adam Lewis, Owner of The Malt
BUTLINS SKEGNESS: REDS REFURBISHMENT
Case Studies
The Brief
Design and build a visually exciting venue with a welcoming and engaging interior where guests will want to spend more time and money, the aim being
to retain clients and raise the Butlins offer.
The Solution
We introduced an ‘organic’ design which uses curvy, flowing shapes and forms to create an environment that brings real visual excitement. The
flowing lines guide guests through the venue, introducing them to the different areas, and directing their line of sight to the bar areas and to the staging
areas. By reshaping the stage area and redesigning the lighting and AV set-up we created a versatile space to host live music and entertainment. The
installation is part of a two-phase 12 month long process, due to be completed mid 2008.
The Result
There was an increase in their revenue streams partnered with greater customer satisfaction and a 13% increase in takings. The increasing customer
satisfaction has improved loyalty and thereby decreased the cost of sales as repeat business doesn’t require advertising spend or discounting products.
“The team immediately understood how to balance our commercial objectives with the needs of our customers. They have created an environment that
has increased the number of users and gained positive feedback from our guests. The venue is now busy throughout the evening and we are looking
forward to working on forthcoming projects with them.’ Jeremy Pardey, Retail Director, Butlins
NEWMASON PROPERTIES: VICTORIA MILLS LOUNGE BAR
Case Studies
The Brief
Consult on the interior look and feel for a resident’s lounge bar on a 400 apartment site in Shipley,
liaising with both the client and existing suppliers and contractors. All the design details and
specifications, including colour scheme, materials, bar details, lighting, flooring, furniture and wall
dressing, had to be considered.
The Solution
After researching the site, type of residents and Newmason’s vision, it was proposed that this venue
would be an extension of the resident’s living and dining room. Therefore similar materials and
design language found in the apartments were explored and recommended for this interior.
Within the very tight 4 week timeframe, we designed a walnut fronted bar and display back bar,
luxurious booth seating covered in alligator and ostrich leatherette, chocolate pendent lighting
which also created a bar bulk head, a slate and weathered wood floor, and stone walls finished with
framed images of the development over the past 5 years; from 3 disused stone mills into 400 new
1 - 3 bed apartments surrounding a landscape of tennis courts, bowls, an oversized chess board
and a fountain.
The Result
The building forms a focal meeting place on a new residential development as well as providing
quality commercial premises.
“Maria and Livia were extremely helpful and proactive in their approach and displayed
professionalism at all times. Their creative flair and attention to detail has resulted in the creation of a
fabulous new building which both the end user and ourselves are delighted with. Given the extreme
tight deadline they were given to work to, I thought their input ensured a first class product was
delivered.” Craig O’Brien, Senior Quantity Surveyor
BUTLINS BOGNOR REGIS: YACHT CLUB
Case Studies
The Brief
Transform the existing Ocean Drive venue and Yacht Club into a gold service restaurant in order to attract clientele from the new hotel.
The Solution
We created a dining and bar experience that is more prestigious than the standard Butlins facilities.
The concept was heavily influenced by the venue name with huge abstract sales dividing the space and leading customers through to the bar. The
semi-transluscent sales made from Ecoresin, when vertical separate the entrance from the diners, but still let the daylight in. The sales then appear to lift
and float up and across the bar, acting as directional signage and a header for the bar.
We designed and built bespoke buffet serveries and behind, large frames to house the changeable menu images. We designed and installed a new bar
to generate an extra source of revenue for the resort and with new pendant lighting, furniture and a warm wood floor, completes the dining experience.
The Result
As a result of the re-design, there was an increase in the quality of service at the venue, which led to increased sales. These improvements have
resulted in an overall smoother operation within the Yacht Club on a daily basis.
LEEDS COUNCIL: TILED HALL CAFE
Case Studies
The Brief
Design, build, install and run a café offer within the Tiled Hall, a venue in between the library and the
art gallery, to be used by both staff and visitors. The design had to be sympathetic to the restored
Tiled Hall, complementary to the design for the book shop which appeared in the same space and
fit within the new brand identity and signage for the refurbished art gallery.
The Solution
The front house catering facilities were modular and spaced away from the existing columns and
walls. An all neutral colour palette was used to maintain a traditional style design along with an old
fashioned chalk board to house the café’s menu and offers. The furniture was simple in both form
and colour so as not to distract from the real beauty of the room itself. The finishing touches were
built-in window poseurs and high stools for guests to sit and ‘people watch’.
The Result
The Tiled Hall Café is situated right in the heart of Leeds city centre, serving food to those with a
real appetite for Yorkshire. The cafe provides the opportunity to eat and drink in the spectacular
surroundings of an original piece of Victorian architecture. It is a rediscovered gem which celebrates
a great period of history that mirrors Leeds today as a city that is booming economically, culturally
and creatively.
