40

Culture is a collection of thoughts

& beliefs that define a way of life.

Belief is gained by experience &

information.

Information is delivered by media.

41

Therefore, culture is heavily

influenced by media - what a

generation consistently hears,

reads and watches.

42

"Early in the 20th century, the Church

embraced motion pictures, radio, then

television and now the Internet and social

media.

But in the vast majority of cases today,

they're not using those platforms to

engage the greater culture, but instead

living inside a bubble.

43

After all, why tweet, when you can join a

Christian alternative to Twitter?

From the web, to publishing, to record labels,

TV networks, universities and more, the last

50 years have seen a remarkable withdrawal

from mainstream culture and a move back to

a cloistered, protective bubble.

44

In all honesty, the Church hasn't been losing

its voice, it's been giving it away. As a result,

they've lost remarkable influence in culture.

It's a tragedy, because Christianity has been

a powerful engine behind social service

outreaches, educational institutions,

hospitals and more".

53

Let‟s look at

what this

generation is

saying online.

55

Having a side job (private practice) when

you‟re in paid employment is expected.

You must know someone influential

to get a job in Nigeria.

All rich men are members of secret cults.

All na runs!

I cannot come and die.

I wasn't born to just pay bills and die.

56

It's "normal" to share profits from a contract

with the person who gave it to you.

Heaven helps those who help themselves.

I'm self made.

Every man for himself.

It is germane to have a side business, even

as a Minister of the Gospel.

You must 'do' weekend for security men,

helps etc., even while they are doing their jobs.

57

Without a degree in an acceptable professional

course, a person cannot make it in life.

As a graduate you must do NYSC, even if it

means faking your age.

You must suck up to your boss to be noticed

and promoted.

Female bosses are wicked to female direct

reports.

58

You have to be a graduate to be relevant and

respected in society.

It doesn't matter what you do, money is the

most important thing.

Hard work doesn't matter, only 'favour'

does.

59

Exchanging sex for money/a good time

out with a guy is expected of women.

A man and woman can't just be friends.

Women are inferior to men.

By default, restaurant waiters are expected

to present the bill to the guy.

When a man takes public transport with a

female friend, he is expected to pay.

60

The woman is to 'sacrifice' for the kids while

it's okay for the man to be successful and not

give a hoot about the kids he made.

If you have many male friends as a woman,

you are promiscuous.

A woman must always forgive her cheating

husband but a family conference will be

called if a wife cheats.

61

A single lady should attend more weddings

to meet potential guys.

If you're a single lady with an SUV or you live

alone, you must be a prostitute or into 'runs„.

If you're female, don't try too hard to be

successful. No man will marry you.

You are never to correct your husband's

younger sibling irrespective of the disrespect

you receive.

62

When a woman doesn't have a child, her

husband feels he's living with another man.

A woman with one child is not much different

from a woman without a child.

It is expected and acceptable for the man to

cheat. It is an abomination for the woman.

Because you're female, you have to respect

men and worship the ground they walk on.

63

A woman shouldn't be outspoken, especially

single females.

A relationship is incomplete without sex.

During a relationship with the opposite sex,

sexual intercourse must take place before

marriage. After marriage the fruit of the womb

must emerge. In the absence of that the

couple is ready to search both holy and unholy

places looking for what was never lost.

64

A mature unmarried woman is arrogant

or a slut or has been cursed. All women are

meant to be married and have kids.

A mature unmarried man is irresponsible.

A man must marry a woman he can “control”.

Hausa people are intellectually slow.

Ijebu people are thieves.

Men from the South-South are lazy.

Government doesn't care about people.

All Nigerian politicians are corrupt.

No matter how inept a leader is, he must

continue because he is from “our region”.

You must have a Godfather before you can

win an election.

A woman can never become the president

of Nigeria.

An older person does not need to respect a

younger person and can deny them of their

rights.

Cats, snakes and owls are witches.

Man must hammer.

Na only after you chop food finish you fit to

touch meat.

Public schools are no good.

Having a "big" car is a bigger priority than a

more comfortable home.

67

All good and perfect ideas come from

abroad.

No time.

You are not a serious Christian if you read

your bible from a tablet.

If you wear trousers and jewellery as a

female, the judgment of hell is surely yours.

Sex on Sunday morning between a man

and his wife is disrespectful to God. Keep the

Sabbath day holy!

Discussing/talking about sex as a Christian

is a taboo, even in church.

Jesus and The Bible are the answers to all

life's problems, not critical thinking.

70

I Just Got Back (IJGB) - New values; new

perspectives; new relationships

Falling educational standards - Reduced reasoning

capacity, industry & independent thinking leading

to a low quality of discourse online

Rising economic empowerment of women - The

Singapore phenomenon may be upon us:

social and family-based dislocations

Freedom of expression – Challenge of traditional

authority structures

Sexual liberation - Cyber hookups and liberal

sexuality

73

74

1. The Church must invest in culturally

relevant digital distribution & broadcast

channels and structures.

2. With the projected growth in media-rich

content, the Church must become an

influential voice & culture shaper by

actively producing relevant content.

75

3. William Congreve said, "Heaven has no rage

like love to hatred turned, nor hell a fury like

a woman scorned”.

Nigeria is producing a generation of bitter,

angry women who unlike their mothers will

not suffer in silence. Their reaction is

heavily contractual sex and the use of dark

arts to get the men they want. Those who

do not have economic or social power will

use what they have – “bottom power”.

76

Therefore, the Church may consider

conversations and engagements to address

the “war of the sexes” and socio-

cultural issues.

Sex also needs to be addressed head-on. The

age of first sexual experience is dropping in

Nigeria and attitudes to rape are alarming.

77

According to the CLEEN Foundation, the

national incidence of rape almost doubled

from three per cent in 2011 to five per cent in

2013.

78

4. The Church may consider conversations

and engagements to tackle negative

cultural mindsets, especially among the

Youth and growing middle class.

5. The Church should invest in community

based technology apps & platforms to

engage members.

6. The Church should invest in analytics to

mine data for cultural trends on an ongoing

basis so it can develop interventions to

address them.
