A Parents Guide: helping your child at home to prepare for scan day
Created by: Victoria Peccolo & Dr. Clark - 2012
Scanner Noise PreparationWe can send home a CD or you may listen directly from this our website: http://autism.loni.ucla.edu/
We would like for you to start off by playing the cd at a low volume while your child is doing a preferred activity. Day by day, slowly increase the volume level until your child can tolerate the noise at a high level. NOTE: Always play the noise while your child is sleeping during a preferred activity.
EARPLUGS & HEADPHONESYour child does not have to wear both earplugs and
headphones. But, he does have to wear at least one.
EARPLUGS & HEADPHONES
Please start desensitizing him in advance.
-Work while your child is in a preferred environment or doing a preferred activity. -Let your child choose which one they would prefer.
First, introduce the item Then, let your child hold them while you show your child how the item worksFinally, use the item properly.
HINT: You could even use the item yourself to show your child that it is OK
