AIA Provider #L491Course #CTC201

1. Understanding wind load requirements and design parameters in HVHZ areas

2. Understand wind-borne debris requirements for glazing systems in HVHZ areas

3. Understanding the necessity for product approvals, specifications and performance features for glazing systems in HVHZ areas

4. Understanding the glazing systems and various design options in HVHZ areas

Windloads determine the types of qualified products for a project and will ultimately be determined by the engineer of record for the project.

Dade County – 146 mph Broward County – 140 mph Monroe County – 150 mph Palm Beach County – 140 mph

Sloped glazing products will typically not be under the same loads as vertical components and have different safety factors and testing parameters than vertical components.

Miniature scale model mockup with surrounding buildings.

Placed in a wind tunnel & subjected to wind with sensors attached at various locations on the mockup.

More real time accuracy than rational analysis.

Check local code mandates.

Florida Code requires that wind speed of 120mph or greater will be an Impact System.

Water Infiltration testing in the lab consists of testing the glazing system by ASTM E331 or E 547 standards

Water Infiltration testing in the field consists of testing the glazing system using the standards; AAMA 502-90 / ASTM E1105 methods A or B, AAMA 501.2-94 “field check”

Water infiltration is expected during major wind or storm events with the presence of water.

NOA’s will include the testing data that confirms a glazing system’s water resistance performance in the laboratory (ASTM E331 and ASTM E547)

Water Infiltration Testing requirements for glazing systems are NOT specifically stated in Building codes, therefore water resistance may not be required and where designated may vary (+ / -) from the NOA or manufacturer’s lab test DP.

ASTM E1105 Field Water Infiltration Testing is the equivalent to ASTM E 331 and ASTM E 547 lab testing and is typically performed from 15% to 20% of maximum positive design pressure. This usually results in 20 PSF or less – water resistance. A minimal hurricane CAT 1.

A Category 1 Hurricane with minimal winds of 77 miles per hour requires that the glazing system resist up to 15lbs/ft of water, or a head of approx. 3” of gathered water at the sill of the assembly.
