HYDROLOGY PROJECT -IICPCB COMPONENT

WATER QUALITY DOMAIN

CENTRAL POLLUTION CONTROL BOARD

Major Activities and Achievements•Real Time Water Quality Monitoring- Installation of 10 stations on river Ganga (8 Stations) and Yamuna (2 Stations)•Renovation of CPCB Water Laboratory covering an area of about 660 square meter and procurement of laboratory and seating furniture•Development of GIS based Web Portal on Water Quality- Visualisation of existing and historical water quality data modules are being developed. •Development of Water Quality Criteria and Standards on surface, water, ground water and marine water. •Development of Decision Support System (DSS) Planning-Water Quality domain for River Bhima. •Development of specifications of Water Quality Lab Equipment/Instruments.• Organised 30 Trainings / Workshops on different aspects of Water Quality for Implementing Agencies. Each training programme was attended by 25 laboratory persons involved in water quality monitoring.

Real Time Water Quality Monitoring of River Ganga and Yamuna

Real Time Water Quality Monitoring of River Ganga (at Haridwar- Upper Ganga Barrage-BhimGoda), Kannauj (Nanamau Bridge), Downstream, Kanpur (Jajmau Bridge Kanpur), Allahabad (Shastri Bridge), Upstream, Varanasi, Upstream, Varanasi, Downstream, Gandhi Ghat, Patna (floating platform), Garden Reach, Kolkata ) and River Yamuna (at Delhi Upstream, Wazirabad and Delhi Downstream Okhla) at 10 locations.Monitoring system is sensor basedSystem functioning for a period of 12 months System have telecommunication systemData transmission through telemetry in server installed in CPCB Delhi OfficeMonitoring data is under going verification through manual monitoringSystem has strengths and weaknessesPossibilities of improvement is being explored

Monitoring Location

Real Time Water Quality Monitoring of River Ganga and Yamuna

Limitations/Achievements of Monitoring System•Site selection and Timely clearance/permission for installation • Frequent calibration is required• Security in remote areas a cause of concern• Wide variation in real time values in respect of some parameters (BOD,COD and Nitrate) however relatively reliable observations in respect of other parameters (pH, DO, Temperature, Colour, Conductivity, Turbidity, Chloride and Ammonia) •System is workable however drop time observed invariably due to communication failure or power disruption•Data used during Maha Kumbh Event 2013/Magh Mela 2014 and issues with water quality intake point of Delhi on Yamuna for instant reporting•Direction issued to SPCB for corrective action on water quality deterioration at water intake point of Delhi and regularly used during Maha Kumbh event.
